Build advice for 1440p - moderate FPS

So I am planning on a new build with the following spec and would really appreciate some specific guidance for flight sim - as I really want to spend some serious time with it. My upgraded 9 year old PC will not kick it anymore.

My plan is for the following - this suits my budget:

RTX 3070FE (when I find one - waiting for an alert)
i5-12600k
MSI MAG Tomahawk DDR4 mobo
32GB Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 3600mhz
Corsair RM850
Arctic Liquid freezer II 360mm CPU cooler

I aim to play at 1440p, I think 4k is a little ambitious if I want high level visuals. I am not looking for silly FPS - but sensible above 30. With that in mind I will find a 27" monitor. And am looking for advice - hope not to go over ÂŁ400.

I would also add for the time being my internet speed will be about 50Mbps - wifi only. I hear this can be a factor.

I current run with 2 SSD’s (both Samsung EVO 860’s) and would hope to re-use those, but I have read that FS is sensitive to read write speeds and as such should I be looking at swapping these out to NVME drives ?

With regards to memory I have seen split opinions regarding the speed effect, would the memory I have listed be quick enough ?

I am really keen to get spend quality time on FS - but don’t want to compromise too much and be disappointed. So any help will be much appreciated.

I can’t comment on your sytem specs directly but I have a Ryzen 3700X/2070 Super/ 32GB 3600 Mhz Ram system running at 1440p and I have the fps locked at 36fps.
It runs pretty well with a mixture of High and ultra settings so I would expect your spec listed above should be slightly better than mine.

Why are you saying wi-fi only though?

If it’s a case of not being near enough to the router to easily wire it you should think about getting a pair of Powerline adapters.

They enable to use your mains wiring as a type of ethernet cable and I have been using them for well over 15 years, they are very reliable and fast. Much better for games than wi-fi in most cases.

Noted - thanks. I used some powerlines in my last house and think I have them somewhere. My internet speed was aimed at what level of connection speed FS needs to update scenery etc at each resolution and if 50 is enough for 1440p.

For what it’s worth:

My spec is:
Ryzen 5800x
RTX 3070
Corsair H100x cooler
ASUS X570 TUF gaming plus Mobo
32gb 3200mhz mem
1x Samsung 970 evo plus 500gb NVME for OS
1x Sabrent rocket Q 1TB NVME for FS
Samsung Odyssey G5 27” 1440p monitor

I run the sim mostly at ultra, dropping to high when doing heavier scenery / vatsim stuff. Nothing to complain about!

It all comes down to cost doesn’t it but this was what I decided was a no compromise 1440p fs2020 rig for my budget of £2k (excluding the screen) in Jan 2020. Sadly I wouldn’t get the same for that money now!

I can’t say what internet speed is appropriate for your requirements but I have a 300Mbps connection which rarely uses more than about 30mbps during my flights.
I have seen it go over 80mbps when flying over London with photogrammetry on.
Obviously having a faster connection also makes the large updates a bit quicker.

Your system will easily run 1440p on high/ultra.

My i7-10700, GTX 1080, 32GB 3000 MHz, NVMe system routinely sits at 44 FPS flying airliners in and out of major cities. Mostly high settings with a couple at medium and a couple at ultra.

I was hoping to use my old Samsung 860 EVo SSD’s (not NVME’s), would I get much benefit from buying NVME drives?

Nothing I have seen would suggest you need to update from a good 2.5in SSD to an NVMe. If you had an HDD, then yes for sure.

NVMe’s are amazing on benchmarks, but that doesn’t translate 1:1 into game performance load times, etc. Check out the many YouTube comparisons that have NVMe, SSD, and HDD tested side by side. A good SSD and an NVMe are very close, with the HDD way behind both of them.

You get more storage for you money with SSD’s right now. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased a larger SSD for my games drive, not a small’ish NVMe.

Really helpful - thanks.

Second that. I moved MSFS from an SSD to a nvme as part of a general tidy up and haven’t really noticed much if any change. Save your cash and reuse your SSDs.

I’ve been running a i7 8086K @5Ghz with a 1080 on a 2K display using native resolution ever since the 1080 came out and on MSFs have been getting around 50+fps with all settings on high.

Hi philmo.

I have a system fairly close to the one you propose - an i7 11700k, z590 motherboard and RTX 3070 ti with 32GB 3,600 mhz ram. It runs the sim very well at 1440p, giving around 50-60fps at mostly ultra settings in most situations, and the CPU, GPU and RAM seem well balanced.

I recently got an Asus VG27AQL1A monitor for it which looks absolutely excellent compared to my old FHD 24in, and you can find plenty of good reviews online for this series of monitors. It’s available from the usual big computer shops in the UK at a bit under your target budget.

To avoid a long and complex cable run I also use Devolo ethernet-over-power adapters, and this has been successful so far and considerably better than my wifi.

Good luck!

I done this last year I added an nvme drive Samsung 970 Evo I think it was. In other games installed on nvme I did notice a reduction in loading times outside MSFS my games load almost instantly.

I don’t think I saw a huge difference with MSFS with using nvme drive.

I had a SanDisk SSD before which have since replaced after it failed with I believe is the same one as your SSD now.

From what I have read the ideal ram speeds are between 3200 to 3600mhz. I doubt your se much difference between 3200 and 3600mhz.

Was noticable when we had a spate of scenery loading freezes however since SU7 that no longer seems to be an issue

What would you suggest to get today? GPU and CPU, 2K Screen. 3060 Ti and 5600X at the moment.

You’ve actually got a solid system for 1080p so unless you were thinking about going with a 1440p or 4k screen I’d stay put.

If you want to upgrade at minimum cost then a 5800x3d would be best. That cpu and a 3060Ti would even work well with a 1440p monitor.

It’s really all about what you are looking to do with the sim and then upgrading your PC to achieve that end. Of course you want to set a budget which always needs to be factored in.

Perhaps if you explain what type of flying along with the planes and add-ons you want to use would help provide you with more targeted advice.
