Button box - On/Off/Toggle for VS

Question: If VS mode is on, and you are trying to turn it off, what is it that you want the AP to do as far as altitude control?

  1. You want it to just go into pitch mode and hold the current pitch angle from now on – even if it means blowing through the set altitude?

  2. You want it to go to ALT HOLD mode and hold the current altitude (and not the target altitude you may have set)?

  3. You want it to pitch up to the max pitch setting for that plane in order to get to the target altitude you have set? (This implies you want it to ignore the plane’s speed and assume you have set enough throttle for the climb, and that at full throttle in the current conditions the plane is able to achieve and maintain max pitch without stalling?)

I think you’ll quickly realize that once VS mode is selected, you can’t just turn it off without giving the AP more information. It’s the same as turning on ALT mode with a higher or lower target altitude, but not telling it how to get there (using VS mode).

So VS mode gets turned off:

  1. Automatically when reaching the target altitude.

  2. Selecting some other vertical mode like ALT HOLD (current altitude).

  3. Turning off the autopilot.

If you currently use a keystroke to turn off VS mode once it’s on, you are going to get Asobo’s behavior as to what the AP will do in that case. I don’t know what that will be because they keep changing the behavior, and the different mods can make it do different things in different planes, too.
