This is a passion, just like football, baseball, tennis, Formula 1, and so on
^ This. I also like motorsport racing and play a bunch of racing games.
If only VR were better in XP. I don’t like it at all. I’m VR exclusive in 2024 now, and there’s nothing better. DCS has good VR, but you get tired of the maps. Aerofly FS4 used to impress me, but it needs a major upgrade now. What keeps me going is knowing the Steam Frame is coming, seeing the aircraft inch forward in quality, and I’m still exploring the planet. I’m on the Silk Roads now, so Caspian Sea, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Malaysia, New Guinea, etc.
VR only i am also. VR works fine in MSFS but also in xp. they will improve significantly VR in next ver thogh. iirc there was a dev blog on this.
If you enjoy the hobby keep doing it. If the hobby stresses you out, don’t do it.
If you’ve never tried DCS before give it a shot. It’s totally different. I find flying in DCS is 5% of the workload. Weapon systems take a long time to learn.
If you use the eagledynamics store version of DCS you can try out each model for 2 weeks for free. Though it takes a month to get good at any one model. The F18 is the way to go to start out.
I think I have not started the sim for about 3 months now. I used to enjoy the betas for MSFS2020 and felt real progress was made with every sim update, but with 2024 the sim seems kind of stuck.
First full disclosure: I have had very few issues with either 2020 or 2024. I know that there are a lot of people that have had issues.
I love flight simming. I lead a very rewarding but also very stressful career and hopping into the sim gives me an opportunity to relax, think, and go to other places. Learning the various aircraft systems, from your basic single prop all the way up to your heavy airliners (although right now, I seem to be focusing on biz jets), scratches a particular part of my brain that just feels so satisfying. While I recognize that real life remains so much different, I’ve been able to see things from the cockpit that I will likely never have the chance to do in my life.
That said, I know there are issues. No piece of software is perfect, most definitely one that is this complex. Each person has a different threshold with what they are willing to tolerate. There have also been missteps by Asobo and Microsoft, which certainly doesn’t help matters.
I guess what I’m trying to say is this: only you can answer the question about whether you want to stick with the hobby. For me, I’ve been pretty consistent, but there are times when I’ll set it down for weeks on end, if not a couple months. That’s OK. At the end of the day, you need to do what gives you satisfaction and enjoyment, and none of us can answer the question for you.
That said, I’m looking forward to hopping back into my H-Jet tonight and taking off from San Antonio around sunset. Promises to be a beautiful view and a great opportunity to continue learning about this small but fast bird…
