This is not a viable solution, but it provides an illustration of what could be achieved if we managed to activate the lens distortion effect in MSFS2024. It would simply require the developers to enable the option in the settings or for a mod to be made available.
That looks amazing. What makes you say it’s not a viable solution?
because the display is distorted and the definition altered
This work on the fisheye effect is highly appreciated and aligns with what we are looking for in MSFS. Would you happen to see a way to integrate this effect directly into the game so that it does not impact the HUD dimensions, the image resolution, and ensures it remains proportional to the field of view (zoom)?
Zooming in and out in external view doesn’t move the cameras position, it just changes the field of view and kind of gives a type of zoom effect. Now, in showcase external view the cameras position can be changed and you can also separately adjust the field of view/zoom level. This same mechanic would be welcomed for external view. For example, the mouse wheel changes the cameras distance form the aircraft within fixed limits, and for instance, + and - zooms the lens while maintaining your aspect ratio. And of course we could still move the camera around with the mouse instead of keys like in showcase view. I voted for this! However, I wonder if Asobo is even bothering with MSFS 2020 development anymore since the release of 2024? Are they actually listening to what the community is saying and wishing for? With so many little bugs and quality of life improvements that could be fixed and implemented, how dedicated are Asobo and MS to actually refining MSFS 2020?
The ragequitbob video clearly shows that a realistic wide angle has a rounded distortion (fisheye). I recreated this effect using an external shader but it would be really great if asobo did what was necessary to integrate this parameter directly into the simulation. So here is what this could look like in ultra wide:
