Cancelling purchase of MSFS 2024

Can anyone advise how to go about cancelling my purchase of MSFS 2024? This is through the MS store.

Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion it was a mistake to go ahead with the pre order when I have found downloads speeds for updates and through the content manager are just so SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW at around 1Mbit/s that it will not be viable to download 2024 when released.
Personal choice I refuse to start ■■■■■■■ around with VPN’s to download software updates, so cutting my losses now. Will revisit getting 2024 when the problem is addressed and fixed. Be clear I have had times when the speeds have been good but recently it is just shockingly terrible.

How fast is your internet connection? Are you using wifi?

250Mb using ethernet.

Have messed with settings as per trouble shooting via these forums and similar searches. On the whole they made things worse. Reversed those settings so at least when I run an only speed test the download speed is within a good range of my expected connection speed.

Tried other things like booting my PC in a clean boot state and restarted my router/modem etc. Bored of it this issue keeps cropping up with MSFS and it is high time this fundamental issue was resolved TBH.

You haven’t purchased it yet. You have only pre-ordered it. Shouldn’t be a problem to cancel the order at this point.

250Mb should be fine. Have you run a speed test on your connection (looks like you did)? Are you in the US? Have you tried pointing to a different server? If your hardwired, are you using Hubs?

Try running these commands (Win11) from cmd:
netsh int ip show tcpstats
netsh int ip show ipstats
netsh int ip show interfaces

Look for a large amount of errors

You can also download from Microsoft TCPView. Launch the App and in Filter, type in flight. Launch FS. Under Remote Address, try pinging or tracert to that IP. If you see a delay, you can call your ISP and give them that info and ask them if they throttle your traffic. Unfortunately, the Internet is best effort

There will be millions of us gamers trying to get FS2024 downloaded.

As big as Microsoft is, I don’t think their servers can handle that
amount of traffic quickly.

We will have to be patient.

I’m thinking positively. For one, the download size is supposed to be smaller. And I may wait a day or two or three to let the initial download wave subside.

i dont see why it will be different to any system update day… thats also millions downloading at the same time

I thought the whole point of the preordering (apart maybe from getting that firefighting plane early) was that we can preinstall the download at our convenience when servers are not busy and then just simply unlock it on launch day? Or does that only apply to the MS Store / Gamepass option I am taking (because I need to in order to keep my 2020 purchases)?

There’s multiple dimensions to this. On release obviously there will be a huge load on ms servers, regardless if you pre load or not, you are still dependent on ms servers for most of your content on release date. And if ms servers are crippled due to the huge load on release, you may not be able to run the sim very good even if you have good internet connection.

Once the release spike is flattened, things should normalise. But again on update days, may be not as bad as you won’t have to download the full content update if you don’t want to fly there.

Microsoft will know how many users have pre-ordered. They have probably crunched numbers to have a stab at how many users are likely to upgrade to 2024. They know what the current load on their CDN’s are right now, so can estimate what it might be like on a major release day, and have the 2020 release to compare that to.

The question is then have Microsoft anticipated this, and made sure necessary resource is made available? Another question is whether its actually possible for them to cope with this, and whether they do have spare capacity to cope with this?

They own azure infrastructure, it is possible to do for them, period. Will they do it? Can they do it within a budget? Hopefully the answer to those is yes.

True, though it’s worth knowing that the Microsoft team that runs MSFS is not linked to the teams who handle Azure storage. I don’t think they can snap their fingers, and have dozens of new endpoints spawn into being. Budget is probably the main constraint.

For those of you who have focused around the download of 2024, that is not primarily what this post was about.

The problem I am/was facing NOW, is that getting simple updates is taking an absolute age because for whatever reason I was only getting 2Mbits/s so getting even relatively small updates has been taking waaaay to long. There is no reason to believe the servers are under any untoward strain RIGHT NOW because there are no major updates etc.

Until this is resolved I cannot see any purpose in parting with my money for 2024 when I simply do not believe it will be possible to download it effectively.

As it stands matters have since gotten far worse as I thought I would do a very simply thing of logging out of my MS account, the MS store and the Xbox app. Really just to see if logging back in again may help - yes clutching at straws!

Logged back into my MS account and MS store no problems. Get to the Xbox app and all I got was a blank black screen (in the app) when I clicked log-in. After god knows how many “fixes” I have tried for this (Microsoft, youtube, internet searches) NOTHING has solved the problem, in fact matter are even worse because in the process of trying to fix the xBox app one of the “fixes” was to reinstall gaming sevrice… Annnnnnd yes you guessed it now that will not reinstall despite an in-place reinstall of win 10.

MSFS is reliant on the Xbox app, the XBox app is reliant on gamine services. so basically I am currently screwed.

What was a slow download problem is now a situation I cannot resolve…

MSFS won’t run because I’m not logged into the Xbox app.
The Xbox app won’t now run because it needs an update - but this won’y work because gaming services is NOT installed.
Trying to install gaming services via the MS store fails. EVERY fix I have seen and tried and failed to resolve this issues I am at a loss and just about ready to trash my PC and call it a day… maybe I will calm down and just format everything in the hope that starting from scratch might resolve this problem… I do not hold out any hope and am in no mood to try because the PC would truely end up in very small pieces if that does not work!

You cannot believe how utterly peeved I am right now. Flight sim is one of my ways to chill at the weekends after ■■■■■■ work all week now it is just another source of frustration.

Update….

I finally managed to find a fix that enabled gaming services to be reinstalled. After that the Xbox app started working properly again so I was able to log back to that as well. As expected the sim started up ok after that, albeit it the connection was still ridiculously slow.
In the end I succumbed end got a VPN which has largely overcome the slow download speed. I have not yet determined if there is a problem with my ISP or if my connection has been throttled.
Anyway the important thing is that I can run the sim and enjoy it again and for now the VPN fix will have to do. I have also pre-purchased MSFS 2024. :+1:

As a further follow-up I have since discovered that the Ethernet port I was using on my router appears to be faulty.
An online speed test was only giving me a 15 mb/s download rate. Using any of the other 3 ports available and the download speed instantly went up to 250-280 mb/s.
To test this further I also downloaded an aircraft from the market place and again achieved a much higher download rate of around 180 mb/s.

Because most people probably only download the sim and world updates the next time they are using the sim and not on day one, spreading things out. With MSFS2024 everyone and their mothers will want to get it immediately.

I’m not expecting to get a flight in before Nov 20. That way I can only get pleasantly surprised.
