Cannot update world update, stuck decompressing files?

  • On Steam

Last night I went to download the new sim update, but it hung at 99% with roughly 80MB left to download. It was stuck on the fs-base-0.1.211.fspatch.001 file. I tried multiple attempts at deleting those files and restarting the game, as well as rebooting the PC. Today I completely uninstalled the sim to redownload, but am now stuck at 44% (349/401 files). I didn’t see what exactly caused it, but I can only assume it’s the same file lol.

Things I’ve tried-
-deletion of update files with restart of installer
-Removal of all community packages

  • Reinstall of MSFS, deleting everything in AppData, steamapps, and packages folder
-Memory test in windows (my memory tested fine with 0 issues).

Specs:
Ryzen 7 5800x
32GB DDR4 32000 Mhz
Asus KO RTX 3060
Windows 11 Pro
Western Digital sn750 nvme:
1x 500GB (main boot/OS)
1x 1TB (secondary)

MSFS is installed on the main/500GB Drive, with the packages folder on the secondary 1TB drive.

Was on the most recent build before having this issue. Now basically on a fresh installation…

Start with this checklist.
Go through the steps.

I’m on steam edition though. Not from the MS store. That shouldn’t matter right?

edit: I’ve confirmed it’s the same exact file every time, and even when I delete that entire package to force the game to redownload it I still have the installer freeze on it:

It’s the “fs-base-0.1.211.fspatch.002” files. It seems to want to decompress but sticks at this. And it’s always at this exact spot.

What is your download speed at?
I have seen cases where that has been an issue as it was getting too much at once and holding up.
An internet download limiter helped.
Another issue was just the opposite.
unknown to the user, their ISP was throttling their download, causing it to freeze.
The use of a free VPN corrected the issue.

The only thing else I can recommend is contacting support:

  1. Click on “Support” at the top of the forum page.

  2. Click on “Submit a request” in the top right corner of that page.

  1. In the drop-down menu “How can we help”, select “I have an issue with a purchase”.

And I’ll add: Be sure to turn your AV/Anti-Malware OFF while installing.
Windows Defender seems to be fine to leave on.

It’s not so much that AV detects false positive(s), I haven’t seen any reports on this,
but most AV are scanning files as they are downloading/decompressing/installing and this can create a bottleneck, to say it simply.

edit: now I have

Wow. It was actually avast causing a false positive. I’ve never had that with MSFS. You are a savior!

It may not have been a false positive, but it was hanging up. Most likely what you said was correct I was just super excited to finally have my answer as to why it was not updating.

I have no antivirus and turned off defender.
No fix. Still issue.

I have the same issue, but the download get stuck decompressing the first file and wont even start, regardless of me turning off my AV.

I had similar issues for months, until I found an advice to run .EXE file with admin privileges (right click/propertes on EXE and check ALWAYS RUN AS ADMIN within compatibility tab).

Immediately after that, everything started to work flawlessly, regarding updates.

Good luck!

if you are stock on the decompression, try this, but I’m steam version and maybe the ms store version has the same folder. to delete the .fspatch file in the folder of “Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Official\Steam”, re-start the game again. it works for me.

deleted that like 20 times now… the solution here on the forum doesnt work for me.
at othere socials i read a lot of the same, so for me it’s unclear why this topic is solved
