Cannot use a combo button when binding axis

I currently use a Gladiator NXT joyskick for msfs2020 and use the twist for rudder control. Fine. I would like to get a yoke at some point and these dont have rudder controls usually. You are expected to use pedals for rudder control I suppose, but I am a wheelchair user and my legs dont work too great, so pedals are out of the picture for me.

What I would like to do is use x axis for rudder but only if you hold down some combo button at the same time. That way I can use x axis for ailerons withought pressing any button as usual but then use x axis for rudder as well if you hold some combo button.

I tried to assign the rudder in this way for my joystick but fs2020 doesnt seem to like you mapping buttons to an axis control even if it is in combination with a physical axis on a joystick/yoke. Can anyone confirm or deny this, or offer any other workarounds?

I am using the version after the Nordics update by the way. Does anyone know if combo buttons with some axis will be supported in the future?

Another option I have been looking at is the ‘CH eclipse yoke’ as this has paddles on the yoke which equate to some axis. I am just wondering if these work well for rudder controls. Does anyone have any experience with this yoke?

Wich version of the Gladiator do you have ?
If it’s the one with the minijoystick, the easiest way would be to bind rudder with left/right of the minijoystick.
What I dont understand is why not continue to use the twist for rudder ?
Do you bind your combo (shifter button) and x axis in MSFS or in VKB software ?
For any VKB assignments questions, you should ask on their forum, they are reactive and they really well know all the deepest capabilities of their programming software.

Thanks. I just use the standard Gladiator without the mini joystick. But yes, sorry, just to clear things up… I want to replace the joystick with a yoke at some point in the future. I dont own a yoke currently, so was just using the joystick to test whether I can do the button + axis combo thing for when I do get a yoke.

Welcome to the community! :slightly_smiling_face:

I have moved your topic into the dedicated #self-service:peripherals section for these topics and tagged with advice.

If I understand correctly, actually you use the twist axis of the stick for rudder.
When you’ll have your yoke, just continue to use the stick twist for rudder.
Or, as you’ll have ailerons and elevator on the yoke, you can use the left/right axis of the stick for rudder.
There will be no need for combo+axis.

Thanks. Thats an interesting solution. Good idea. Might be slightly awkward to use a yoke and a stick. Yoke combo+x axis would be better or the paddles on a ch eclipse yoke would be better IMO.

If you want to only use a yoke without the Gladiator in the same time, the best choice will surely be the CH Eclipse with the paddles for rudder.
Because when flying you have to use rudder AND ailerons together to coordonate your turns. You cannot do this with a combo+aileron axis.
You’ll have ailerons OR rudder but not both together.
The eventual issue I see with the Eclipse is how easy and practical is it to access to levers. With the arm over the yoke ?
You have to find some users to ask them.
As you already have the Gladiator, could you find a yoke or another stick from a friend for a couple of days ? Give you the opportunity to test rudder on Gladiator with ailerons/elevator on the other device.
Would be a great help for choosing.

These are all good points and I was thinking about the lever practicality issue on the eclipse. Probably, knowing me, I will get the logitech throttle quadrant sooner or later (i’m sure you know the one I mean), to avoid having to lean over the yoke every time I need to adjust the throttle. Should give finer control over the throttle too.

And yes, I would dearly like to hear from any CH eclipse yoke owners. Particuarly on the paddles. Do they work well? Break easy? Need a huge deadzone etc. I have seen a few reviews of this yoke but only for older flight sims like FSX. Not many recent reviews for it used in the context of FS2020.

Just a quick update… Had a look around these forums for any details on the eclipse yoke. I found a few posts which seem to praise it, others have trouble. I couldn’t find much info on the paddles specifically though. I did find something which might be interesting to some though. There is a MSFS companion app https://flightsim.to/file/2828/msfs-mobile-companion-app. Apparently it gives on-screen control of the rudder amongst other things, although I havnt tried it myself yet.

Anyway, I have a Reverb G2 VR headset which I plan to use more once I get half decent at landing. So if I am in VR, trying to click on-screen buttons on some external screen would be impossible. I want to avoid this option if possible. The hardware option of the paddles of the eclipse yoke would be the most ideal option if it works OK. Or maybe someone knows of some 3D printed paddle solution, since I have a 3D printer and some basic elecronics skills?
