Caravan Amphibians Out Of Control (MSFS2024)

Hello, forum. Sorry to bother you.

I managed to argue myself into buying MSFS2024 recently because I’d wanted to buy the Twin Otter add-on from Aerosoft but discovered it had been removed from sale and added into FS24 instead.

I do like that plane, although I find the autopilot extremely difficult to use for altitude control. I think I have more studying to do to work out its quirks, as button presses often seem not to do what I expect they’ll do, or changes seem to kind of reset each other…

Anyway, that aside, I was delighted to find that the Cessna Caravan Amphibian is included in 2024. This made me happy, because the Amphib Caravan was my One True Plane in FSX and I was sad it didn’t make it into FS2020 (the fact that it was just a fixed model with no opening doors etc was also a disappointment). So I couldn’t wait to get reacquainted with my old friend… but…

Does anyone else find the Caravan Amphibian almost impossible to control? I’m trundling down the runway and almost immediately I apply takeoff throttle the plane’s trying to roll and yaw wildly - it’s like the taildraggers in 2020, and as with those planes, I can barely get it in the air without it flipping over or veering off the runway. I managed to get it in the air once, landed it, and halfway down the runway it just fishtailed and rolled over sideways.

Is it a setting? Something I’ve missed? Is anyone else having the same problem? I don’t remember the Caravan Amphibian being anything close to this unstable in FSX.

Same for me, I have stopped trying to land on runways with it. Only water. Even the fully wheeled version wobbles and feels like its about to tip over on landing. It is an inherently unstable plane in MSFS 24. You’ve really got to love its quirks to want to fly it.

Ah, shame. Honestly I was hoping you were going to say something like, “Why yes, you inept simmer, you - you need to tweak this button thuswise, and that will compensate for the [complicated bit of aviation physics I hadn’t accounted for], and stabilise the aircraft.”

But I can’t deny I’ve heard some of the commentary around this sim and I did have it in the back of my mind that that probably wouldn’t be the case. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

See also here the post I linked below.
I find the caravan kind of the worst plane to takeoff, land and taxi - and that was the “normal” wheels version already. Even taildraggers mostly act better.

Just tested the floats variant you mention, it’s kind of just as bad in my opinion.
Even without wind on a tarmac runway it tries to tip you over sideways, wobble into different directions etc.

The post is from December (2024) and is “bug logged”, so we can hope for an improvement between 2026 and 2027 I guess, with the current bug fixing speed on aircraft
