Please allow me to divert to an alternate. I don’t mind losing income (whoever pays for the flight will not be happy to have to hire a taxi or lorry to get people or goods to the destination), but keep the reputation loss to a minimum. A pilot should not be punished if they decide they can’t make a landing, for whatever reason, and want to take a safer option.
Would rather we had easier ingame access to information (PRE-accepting a mission) that would help us evaluate the airports, runways, weather and what not.
will say that I’m only a few weeks in and this is my first flight Sim, but the amount of hoops I feel I need to jump in order to be not even close to prepared is insane.
Do yourself a favor and write off career mode. It’s a half-baked mess, kind of like if someone tossed some eggs in a pan at really low heat, then threw the shells in for extra calcium because they can’t waste anything, and then tried to sell it as a “cooking experience.” There are other options that, while not quite the same, might give you a “purpose in flying.”
I’d suggest that you look at sayintentions.ai (for the ATC) and OnAir.company (for the career stuff). And no, I have no affiliations with either. Just that I’m tired of my favorite flight simulator franchise sucking ■■■ like a Dyson.
That information is all in the EFB, just click the i icon to the left of the arrival airport, then you can check runway lengths under the runway tab, if the airport has an automated weather station then you can get the weather from the weather tab, otherwise you can find the closest airport that’s reporting weather and use that as a good approximation.
I had just to land without engine on my last Medium Cargo mission with my C208.
This was a long (+2300km) 3 stars mission, and at the hangar, pre flight, it showed something like 419Kg of fuel needed. I was like “what ?” so I filled the plane at 100%.
I had 16-25 kts headwind almost all the trip, so here you go.
Landing at an alternative would have been more realistic than praying and using a C208 with a 1.2t cargo as a glider on final.
Luckily, the game detected my issue, and the mission goal, once landed, was “Stop the plane” and not “Go to any hold point” so the mission was successful anyway but with a penalty in the procedure category. Nice thing here.
So yep, alternate or rerouting would be nice, with a penalty accordingly with the distance to original destination.
I don’t know if I should make this as it’s own wishlist topic, but search & rescue missions should give you the option to declare that the area is not safe to land at. IMO it should give you a bonus for landing and rescuing the person, and the current reward should just be for finding them.
There has already been too many times where the lost person has been in either a dense forest that has no possible landing location, or the slope is too severe which causes the helicopter to crash in the cutscene. This is the non-hoist Search & Rescue helicopter mission. Of course the same system could apply to planes.
Especially expected altitudes for first flights, flightseeing, and science missions. It’ s kind of ridiculous when there’s a 400+ climb or descent between the cruising altitude and the altitude over the POI and only tenths of miles in which to make the change.
The EFB is pulling the real world METAR, which can be substantially different than the simulator’s dynamic weather, so this often doesn’t work in practice.
One important problem in missions is the failure when you cannot lend at destination. Be it because headwinds impacted the fuel, because weather is above minima, or because you have some failure.
Diversion to alternate is a fundamental aspect of safe flying and with MSFS being a key software in pilot training, it should be implemented solidly.
Ofc course it should penalize the total outcome, as passengers hate landing on the wrong place, bute sure beats landing on fumes, failing to land, descending below minimums, etc.
I hope it’s not a key software used in training, it’s not certified for that. It can be used personally to supplement training procedures like running a checklist but as an instructor I see a lot of faults in 2024 that could cause problems IRL or build bad habits for pilots because of bugs or limitations. 2024 is meant to be a sim for anyone and everyone not a true 1:1 for replacing real world flying. plus flying in any sim is very different than real life, there are so many things that 2024 simply cannot replicate that are vital for real world flying
But on topic yes, I totally agree that you should be able to divert without a complete failure. maybe an expense for some fuel and a night in a hotel but not complete failure
