Despite all it’s current flaws and bugs, to me there is no going back to free flight, apart from testing an aircraft or trying one out that is not available in career.
What I like about the career mode is the presentation, headquarter, loading screen in the hanger, boarding animations, mission variety (I’m doing both plane and helo career) etc. All these little things add a lot to the overall feel and vibe of your career.
I hope that we’ll soon be able to repaint and select liveries/colors for our own aircraft. Also looking forward to seeing more aircraft available in career.

I second that. I’m actully managing two firms, cargo and VIP charter.
I would like to see managing crews coming into the career-mode.
I think I could get on board with this if the career and free flight features could be merged. Headquarters and loading screens would be trivial adds, but it would be nice to have persistence, paint wear, accumulated dirt, and maintenance on your personal aircraft, with the flexibility to plan and execute your own flights without the career mode’s narrow guardrails.
The career mode is waaay too restrictive to fully take over how I use the sim. You can’t choose what types of airports you’d like to use, or even to and where you’d like to fly outside of some narrow parameters. You can’t pick where to park. You can’t divert, stop enroute, or change your flight plan midflight. You can’t really pick what time you’d like to fly. And while there are several different mission types, the missions within those types are pretty much all identical, so there’s no real depth to Career either.
But if you had free flight flexibility, combined with career features, you could have a really engaging way to use the sim. It’s a good start, but it has a long way to go.
