Has anyone tried this helicopter yet? Worth purchasing?
Looks very good. I hoped dcs to update its mi8 for years but they didnāt give a ā ā ā ā .
First flight was excellent! Iām not nearly as good as that pilot in the video, but managed a full circuit. Sounds are great too. Gotta read the manual now.
Just a heads up, the installer and the manual indicate the Community folder for Steam installs is Local. However, my Steam Community folder is Roaming. I had to correct the default path in the installer to point to Roaming.
Cera Sim made some of the very best helicopters for FSX / P3D
They had good customer service and provided timely updates where needed.
I would buy this on reputation alone.
Hopefully they will follow with their outstanding UH-60
Yes, they have a nice selection of helicopters for P3D, so I expect they will be ported eventually. The UH-60 would be my first choice as well.
Yeah ı remember flying with their uh60 in fsx. It was ahead of their time
Spins wildly out of control on liftoff and flips over. I must be missing something in the setup?
A few issues I have with the Mi-17 so farā¦
1. Is there a trim binding?
The Increase/Decrease Rotor Lateral/Longitudinal bindings work but immediately get reset back to zero. Thatās fine, the real helicopter doesnāt have beeper trim to my knowledge.
However, the Set Rotor Lateral/Longitudinal bindings donāt seem to do anything at all.
Clicking the Trim Switch button on the physical cyclic in the cockpit does work, but also only seems to set Pitch trim, leaving Roll centered. But I canāt realistically be clicking it mid flight, I need a functional binding.
Similarly, the trim reset binding does not work, but clicking the reset button on the cyclic does.
So something is definitely weird with trim - Is there something I have missed? This issue alone effectively kills my desire to actually fly this add-on.
2. No sound if you start the right engine first
If you start the right engine first you get no rotor or engine sounds until you open fuel to the left engine. Definitely a bug.
3. Some of the surfaces are excessively reflective with lights on.
Particularly the back wall beside the electrical panel.
4. Some backlights flicker
Really not sure if this actually a Mi-17 problem or just a my-computer problem, but I get a lot of flickering from the backlights in the upper panels and the center console radio panels and the gps buttons. Itās very possible this is just my current NVIDIA driver but Iām listing it here in case anyone else can report the same thing.
5. Very low res textures in prominent places
There are a variety of low res textures throughout the cockpit but these in particular stand out because they are things you look at regularly. These need to be improved for a payware product at this price point.
Collective and Cyclic:
The main panel background, most obviously the white line around the primary instruments:
6. No right cyclic required on takeoff
Unless Iām mistaken this helicopter should require essentially the same takeoff trim as the DCS Mi-8, but it seems to want to take off with almost neutral cyclic. Maybe a little aft pressure.
7. Spatial Audio fades things out too aggressively
What you hear sitting in this helicopter, especially with the window open, is a mix of engines, transmission, rotors blades, air movement, the chirping of the swashplate drive link, etc. Itās a mix of different sounds from different sources.
With āSpatial Soundā enabled I really only hear one of these at a time depending on which way I am facing. If I turn my head other sounds fade in and out as I look around. Sometimes I only hear the rotor blades, sometimes only the drive link, sometimes only the transmission, etc.
This probably could use some tweaking so that individual sounds are more prominent when looking at them without making the others fade out entirely.
I agree and see the same things as you. Also, are you able to right click on any of the switches? Once I left click on some switches, I canāt manipulate the switch anymore - not even with panels that have a stop button. For me, there also appears to be a noticable rough trasition between a few areas in the flight model, which causes a slight jolt in the arcraft attitude.
Overall for now, I give Cera Sim a pass for these issues. This appears to be a fantastic product that has the potential to be top tier. I donāt have experience with Cera Sim from other simulators, so Iāll see how their support, updates, and general community response is in the next few months. I will say that I hope they are as committed to their products as otherās have mentioned.
I donāt regret purchasing the Cera Sim Mi-17V-5, I consider it a preview/beta look at what fidelity of addon and simulation experience to expect from them in the near future. With that frame of mind, Iām pretty happy with a vehicle (Cera Sim Mi-17V-5) I can land at the Kremlin helipad, as a believable scenario. It was the first trip I took with this addon.
BTW, great DCS videos for the Mi-8.
I figured some things out:
-
Cockpit Interaction seems to have to be on Modern not classic. I dont know the english term in the options, in german it is āgesperrtā. But not classic. otherwise you cant use some switches after you left clicked them. And with the non classic method you can switch these switches with left AND right clicks.

At least in SU14 Beta the trim Button doesnt work and the cerasim code prevents the use of trim decrease increase. To solve this goto into the
community\cerasim-aircraft-cera-mi17v5\SimObjects\Airplanes\Cerasim_MI17_V5\panel\Gauges\Msystem.xml
and delete the lines 265 through 282.
After that trim should work. It is not the right method for this chopper, but until the propper trim button (Force Trim) works, this at least give some trim functionality.
Thank you for the trim tip JayDee, will try that, really hope they implement the autopilot and trim functions in the future.
The mouse interaction names is legacy and lock i believe, i only use legacy mode because i cant stand that blue lightā¦ Took some time to figure out i had to switch to lock mode, this have to be fixed.
Otherwise i think itās a cool heli, but needs some work on some low quality textures, and as someone mentioned the flightmodel seams to have some problems.
I also getting some heavy stutters in Vr, but have to check that further.
Great insight . I am now able to cold start both turbines and manipulate all the functional switches.
Yeah overall I have fun with it and I think this has potential. Me too dont like the locked mode^^. This indeed should be fixed under all circumstances. Regarding the trim I have tried some independed things in the sim and the Trim Set Events just seem to be broken right now. It looks as if this is not even the fault of this helicopter.
Here would be my first Impression Video (german language) and my Black Cockpit Panel Mod
Cheers
JayDee
hopefully this has also been communicated directly to Cera - probably you could just reference and link them to this thread
Has the trim set bug been reported in the beta forums yet?
I will see if i can find something. When I think about, the trim set event might be broken even before su14 because i havent seen any chopper using a real force trim method (which trim set events would be).
