Cessna 172 G1000 Unable to start a new Flight Plan, help please

I am using Steam version 1.35.21.0 on Windows 10 Pro.

I am attempting to begin a Flight Plan from scratch while sitting in Parking.
So far I am running into a dead end and seemed to be missing something.

Here are some screen shots of what I am doing:

  1. First I clicked on FPL and landed here.

I would like to edit Origin - _____ for my departure. Is that the correct 1st move?
Have not been able to do it so went here:

Then here:

Now I filled in the Airport but could not move any further.
What am I missing?
This should fill in my Departure, I would think.
Please advise, thanks.

Hi @wizardwatch
Your problem is on the second screen. You do NOT want to go into selecting a “Procedure” (labeled above that box). You want to stay on the page in your first screen shot.
Then use the FMS dial/pushbutton to select the airport you want. Notice FMS consists of three parts: A button on the end of it that can be pushed, and a large tunable knob, and a small tunable knob.

Push the end of that button to activate the screen (you’ll see the highlighted area start to flash). Turn the big knob to move the selected area to the origin line (below where it says “origin”). Then turn the small knob, and it will open a waypoint selection screen. After that, the large knob will select the position you can edit (first letter/number, then second letter/number, etc). The small knob will rotate through all the letters/numbers. Get you letter/number you need, then use the big knob to move to the next position and select the next letter/number. It’s a lot easier to do than to write about! You’ll see the logic once you start messing with it!
Once you’ve got the airport ID in, hit the “ENT” button to select it (it says that at the bottom of that area as a reminder). After you’ve got the airport ID’d, turn the little knob and it will give you the option to select the runway you want.
Then use the big knob to move down to the enroute area, and basically do the same thing (using big and small knobs) to select the waypoint you want. Enter as many waypoints you want and then use big knob to go to destination, and do the same process to identify the airport you want to go to.

It becomes pretty easy once you see the logic of how the FMS button/knobs works.
Let me know if you have any other issues.

Hi Habu2u2,
First, thanks for helping me on this.
So, I have arrived at that 1st screen several times and properly keyed in my desired airport using the Lg and Sml knobs. Then, it seemed I could not get it to move to another screen. That was the crux of my exasperation.

I will try what you have suggested very carefully.
Thanks again.

Thanks again. I solved it by shear accident. I saw a tiny clip on Youtube and the video showed my ridiculous error.

On the first screen, you get, right!
ORIGIN - _ _ _ _

I was trying to place my airport ID in the 4 underscores, not the blank on the next line. How stupid!
After I discovered that, it was a piece of cake.

Thanks

If you’re able to get the origin airport in then we’re starting well. I’m not sure which “next screen” You expect to go to. Once you’ve got the origin in, we should be able to get to the “enroute” area right below the “origin” using the same knobs and then enter the waypoints just like you entered the origin airport. I’ll have more time tomorrow to try and get you some more specific information.
We’ll get it working!

Hi Habi2u2,
I have successfully loaded an entire FPL with Waypoints and an Approach and ILS Freq.
So, it looks good to go. I will fly it tomorrow to test it but it looks great.

Thanks for your help.

Glad that’s all the problem was! You’re not the first (and won’t be the last) person to do that. It’s not a great way for Garmin to display that page. But it is what it is!
