Chaging to a new computer - best way to reinstall MSFS?

Hi guys,

for those of you have reinstall MSFS in a new PC, can you please support with the following questions?

  • do i need to “uninstall” MSFS in my old PC and then “install” it again in the new one? or i can just format my old pc even by having MSFS install?

  • what was your method for reinstallation? i have seen some videos were the ONE STORE folder is copied into a drive (e.g external drive), then in the new PC once the game starts to install, they close it when around 2% (thus the community and one store folders are created), then they take the one store folder of the external drive and copied in the new one. Will this work?

  • i got feedback in the forum that all hardware configuration (joystick mappings etc) will remain there as they will be pull automatically from my account. So there is not need to re mapp everything again. Was it like that for you?

-If there other useful tipp i should consider before changing into a new PC?

I appreciate your feedback!

  1. There is no need to uninstall. You can install copies on multiple machines. The license is tied to your MS or Steam account.

  2. ? (I don’t know the best way to eg. reduce download by preserving or copying files.)

  3. The configuration appears to now be stored in the cloud, so it should automatically be restored in the new install. The old instructions about locating and backing up or modifying config files no longer applies.

You don’t need to format and reinstall the OS and software, even if you change your platform (Intel to AMD or viceversa). You just reboot Windows once installed the new hardware and then install the chipset drivers. MSFS will start as usual.

I have recently been in this situation where I had to “move” to a new computer. With MSFS, it was no deal at all. No need to uninstall or anything.
On the new computer I just installed it from Steam and had all my keybindings available. I think I had to go over some of the basic settings but that was about it.

Believe me, before I moved I worried about all the things I had to do, I made lists and plans and in the end, I didnt need any of that. It was a simple thing.

haha that’s exactly what i am currently doing! just to make sure i don’t miss anything. Well, nice to hear from your experience, probably it will be much smoother as i initially though!

I’ve not had to yet move FS2020 to a new machine, but I’m assuming that most time would be spent migrating third-party aircraft and utilities, especially those that have license activation. Here’s what I’d have to personally consider:

-PMDG 737-800
-Black Square Caravan/Bonanza
-Navigraph Charts
-Spad.Next
-Simbrief Downloader
<I’m sure I’m missing something>

Also curious if custom camera views (camera.cfg) files get migrated…easy enough to copy/paste the file structure.

I’ll try and do you one better: my list also included reinstalling all my peripherals and a number of other software items I use for flying. The list had 7 or 8 points. In the end there were no issues with anything at all. Yoke was fine, Saitek and Virpil worked right after plugging them in, Honeycomb Bravo, no issue, Spacedesk, VoiceAttack - no issues at all.

I am a worst case scenaro kinda guy but this transition went as smoothly as it could have.

Of course there is the obvious caveat: we are all different and we all have different computers. I have had no issue with things where others had massive problems (not necessarily MSFS, more like in general).

So good luck to you and I am sure things will work out.

yeah this is a good point, i had to spent some time configuring this!, do you know where is this located? i am not finding it, might be looking in the wrong folder…

Folder for my install is: C:\Users<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SimObjects\Airplanes

Below the Airplanes folder is a subfolder for every plane you’ve flown, with state.cfg and cameras.cfg (exists if you’ve created any custom views). I periodically copy the entire folder tree to OneDrive for safe keeping. It’s also nice if you fly a similar plane with a different model, i.e. PMDG 737-800 vs -700. If the cockpit is the same layout, you can generally copy the cameras.cfg between folders so you don’t have to recreate the views. Requires a restart of FS2020, though.

Since I use one large monitor and map buttons to many of the views, definitely important for me to save this structure. I had an issue where the installer crashed when I enrolled in the AAU2 beta, and I lost all of these…was a lot of work to reconstruct.
