Would appreciate your help. I changed the flight model from legacy to modern, and now the sim fails with a ctd seconds after starting. Any ideas?

Try removing all 3rd party addons/mods/liveries from your community folder and start MSFS up on it’s own.
It may be that one of the mods is incompatible with the modern flight model.

Thank you for the quick reply, appreciated.I should have explained in my OP that I’d tried the usual suspects: an empty Community folder, logout/login and launch from the Store, app repair/reset etc. None successful, therefore the plea for help! A reinstall is out of the question, so the only solution was to restore from a backup image.
I will raise a bug/issue report, if nothing else to at least bring it to the dev’s attention. At a loss as to how such a simple change renders the sim inoperable.
Ahh well, back to beta testing for Asobo.

Out of interest, can you check what error code you’re getting in event viewer?
If it’s the the generic …0005 it won’t help much, but anything else may give a hint at the issue.
Ahh pity. I failed to check the event log before restoring the backup image. Sorry.
