Chinese megacities

Hi all,

the sim/game is great and the autogen AI does a very good job in many situations (some little flaws in church/monuments or sport centers but acceptable).

I’ve noticed however some big issues in recognizing chinese big cities (Shenzen, Chengdu, etc …) they’re supposed to be filled by skyscrapers but for some reason the AI here failed to recognize most of them … that’s a pity since they have some impressive skylines in the reality.

Any chance of improvements for the future?

I think that in general it is using very very old satellite images to base things on. Most of the Chinese cities have grown in the last 10 years.
I just hope Google who have much newer images will collaborate with another flight sim and then we really will have a world to fly in.

Hi, not sure about that, even in bing images the place is clearly filled by big buildings … maybe a matter of quality of the picture (the image is kind of oblique) or poor altimeter data …

I do not think the images in the sim are always as new as the Bing ones.

It‘s not just satellite images that are being used: it would be near to impossible to estimate the height of a building based on a top-down image alone (unless you have a distinct shadow and know the exact date and time the photo was taken).

So the AI also taps into other data sources such as OpenStreetMap, where the actual number of stories per building are stored. That of course may lead to other interesting buildings. Look up „citadel melbourne fs2020“

Morale of the story: never underestimate the importance of your job, even if it is just a school assignment

Thanks for the insight, now everything makes a bit more sense to me. Let’s hope some chinese contributor want to put height information on buildings then
