My experience with MSFS on Xbox series S is about… 50/50. Half the time it works somewhat well, and the other its a complete joke. I just spent 30 minutes preparing for a flight (entering every thing in my FMC) in my Cessna 337. I do this myself because the flight planing and ATC in MSFS is just awful. I taxi to the runway, take off and BAM!! ALL flight instruments go black. This happens ALL THE TIME!! On all different aircraft. I’ve followed all instructions, no world updates, no AI traffic, no multi-player, and basically everything is just bare bones to fly. This still happens. I spent over $1000 dollars on the Xbox, Turtle Beach velocity one flight and pedals and everything to make my sim flying experience fun. But sadly , by having an Xbox version, it’s just junk. It’s more frustrating to try and have an incident free flight than it’s worth. I should have went with my gut and bought a IMac and Xplane. I had that in the past and never had any issues at all. MSFS (for Xbox anyway) is garbage.
I used to have the sim on the Series S, but it became apparent to me that eventually the Series S could not handle too many add-ons. I switched over to a Series X and right now it’s pretty stable. Like you, I’ve invested quite a bit of money and time into the sim, but I’m afraid that if I’m going to continue with it I’ll have to get a PC. I think having the sim on console seemed like a good idea, but the limitations are becoming too noticeable.
series X here and it runs great. I actually never had any stability issues. Only the LOD issue in SU11 or was it 12…? Hope you find what you’re looking for so you can continue to hit the skies. ![]()

Did you have the weather radar turned on?
Just got the series X for $349 and the 4k graphics blow me away, especially on a 65in TV. Haven’t had one problem yet. Run super smooth. I tried the series S last year and wasn’t impressed. Too much popping in of scenery. But the X really blows it away.
I completely understand how things can go quickly south when the sim doesn’t run properly. I have been there! I had the sim on Xbox for a long time and sometimes, when it did not work, it feels just like a kick in the back.
Lemme offer you some help. With the issues (which I am assuming is the black screen issue), can you answer me these questions for when they occurred?
- What plane were you using?
- What airport were you at?
- Did you have any addon scenery installed?
- What else is installed, addon wise? World updates? etc.
That way we (as in, us community volunteers) can help you out ![]()
I would try and do a flight in the A320 or CJ4 from KMBS-KDTW and let me know your results. It’s a quick 20-minute flight in a low-scenery area, so you may have not have issues. If you end up getting black screens or low FPS, then I can offer you some other tips.
Best of luck! ![]()
I’ll keep repeating this as long as it’s an issue, but it’s crazy that the core value prop of a console game - stability - is straight up nerfed with MSFS. It should be a five alarm fire for MS, and yet folks have put up with it for years now.
Folks playing other console games sometimes complain about FPS compared to PC. Thats nothing compared to what can be a borderline unplayable experience on console with MSFS.
Seems like nobody is happy (except those that are ha), the Xbox users complain the sim isn’t very good on Xbox, and the PC users complain that bringing the sim onto Xbox degraded the graphical quality and limited available features…
I’m perfectly happy on Xbox Series X , plus the sim on pc and xbox are the same, as stated by microsoft/asobo numerous times, pc just have more choice with enhancements and add ons
To all who were so kind to reply, thank you. My main point is what’s the point of having this “super detailed, state of the art simulator if you have to turn everything off to make it somewhat playable? I can’t use any of the world updates, no multiplayer content, and apparently no add on’s at all. It’s frustrating and sad. I see so many people getting really great add on aircraft and scenery and I can’t because the whole sim will be useless. I’m just upset…sorry for the rant. Have a great weekend everyone!
Hi,
The Xbox is a closed platform, therefore any severe crashes should be taken very seriously by the development team. Not only that but they should be able to pinpoint the exact reason every time an Xbox crashes, they’ll get the data from that.
I hope they fix these issues, we all fly as one and when one suffers it needs to be noted.
Thanks.
Not quite the same, the PC version running at its best has slightly sharper texturing and greater draw distance. Which dispels the myth that the sim has been dumbed down for PC by the release of the sim on Xbox.
We’re also increasingly seeing third-party products being separately ‘tweaked’ for Xbox to better take advantage of that platform’s more limited hardware.
I felt compelled to pipe in here because I recently (month or so ago) I stopped using MSFS on Xbox completely and went over to Aero fly FS4, and because I’m a casual simmer it was the perfect switch. I stated in the forum that I would stay active so I can keep up to date on MSFS (and I will), with the hopes that one day it would be totally bug free and finally be a refined finished product. From the sounds of this thread, the SIM is definitely not heading in that direction. When I was using it, it felt more like a SIM in a perpetual BETA state. From a consumer stand point I told myself “enough is enough”, I wasn’t going to be stupid enough to stick with it for years and just sluff it off to “oh well, we’re tolerant”, “they’ll get it fixed”, ““one day”” and live with this false sense of faith that all my wasted time on it would have been worth it. Not me, you buy something in a store you return it if it’s broke, and you don’t buy it again. You don’t go to a new car dealer and buy a car without an engine in the hopes the dealer one day will call you and say “Oh by the way”, “we finally got an engine for your car” or “we finally got the parts to make it run smooth”. I don’t know, that’s just me, I’m a smart consumer and when enough is enough, you don’t go there again. BUT, (caveat here), who knows, maybe I’ll crave that really nice scenery that MSFS has again one day and come back once its finished. Who knows what the future holds. ![]()
correction. I’ve had two crashes (frozen when reaching cruise alt) in the past 3 flights.
what the hell…haven’t anything like this in 2 years. Both flights were the 787.
further correction:
I found that these crashes were due to my tv’s game mode toggling on and off…which diruspted the sim. I have disabled the game mode and so far so good. back to normal.
I tend to fly more steam gauge aircraft and very rarely visit highly populated big airports, so far i’ve only had 1 ctd , 2 black screens and some stuttering near the new Cologne bonn airport, and this is since day one release so Ive been flying in sim 3 years with nearly 450 hours.
Me again… most of these replies are:
- What plane were you using?
- What airport were you at?
- Did you have any addon scenery installed?
- What else is installed, addon wise? World updates?
- Did you have weather radar on?
This should NOT render the simulation unusable! If the Xbox series S can’t handle it, it should be STATED and the add on’s shouldn’t be sold nor available to us as users! If I can’t fly a SIMULATOR and turn on the weather radar without it crashing… then what’s the point?
I totally agree with you. On xbox we don´t get what we have paid for. The xbox is a closed system. The user can´t do any changes outside the given structures. For example I installed a third party scenery for airport TNCM, now after a WU or SU I have doubled textures on Runway and taxiways. I think there is some kind of exclude file not working or missing. And there are so many bugs out there, which are making the sim unusable on xbox. Overall it´s very frustrating.
I have never had an Xbox so can’t say anything about it but I’m on pc and my disappointment is large. I hate putting down the work that these people have done but please if it is so unreliable now for a big percentage of people then come clean tell us and get something sorted for us …… please.
Oh… and don’t even GET me started on the “floating runway lights”! Good God please fix that!!
