Complete shutdown and crash

Good day fellow Flightsimmers,

Normally I’m a happy VFR flyer, and never have any CTD’s but today was something new.
I was flying the PMDG 737-700 from EHRD to ENBR. I paused the game for a couple of minutes after being for an hour into the flight without issues, but when I unpaused, my PC immediately crashed completely. It even took me several to times to get it working again, al was messed up.

Ran all diagnostics and stress tests available afterwards, but everything is perfectly fine, from temperature to voltage and memory.
But now I don’t really feel comfortable using MSFS again, because something went really wrong.
Anyone any idea what could have happened?

Thnx in advance!

Personal Comments and Observations

CTDs do happen in many applications. Just relaunch. If it happens again, you’ll need to do some troubleshooting.

ehh. ok. That’s really helpful. I DID troubleshooting, found nothing.

your whole PC crashed ( shutdown ) or only MSFS ?

In case of the PC, it can be a hardware problem ( gpu, psu ) , but also a driver thing. Hard to find.. In case it happens again, you should check. And, if the PC crashed, dont forget running a “sfc /scannow” .

Yes a complete shutdown (Like the title says) Will try the sfc/ scannow option, thanks!

we have some topics about a pc shutdown.. but as mentioned, I would be “nervous” only if that happens again.

Then possible trick might be to set a fps limit , which reduce the load on the GPU a bit. Some times it can also be a defective PSU. But we had also some other strange causes, e.g. loose cable , the antivirus tool, HAGS, etc…

I am experiencing the samething on xbox. About 1 minute into the game it will crash. I have closed the game and cleared my Alt Mac address. Still no luck

@THUNDERKILO30
This thread is about a pc issue not xbox.
Op should have marked it pc.

Give search try for your xbox issue.

Does this happen every time you pause for a few minutes and then unpause? Are you using F11 Pause and F12 Unpause?

Ok, just putting this out there but your mileage may vary…

I was getting an issue where as my PC goes into the MSFS menus after downloading and unpacking the 100 and something GB of packages I experience a full hard reset of the PC, ie. full reboot. I’m currently experiencing the ‘you are missing packages’ issue however back to the hard reset.

When MSFS goes into the menus it appears to be at an unlocked framerate. I have a hi spec GPU (AMD6800XT) and it seems this sudden burst of unlimted frame rate is not well handled by my GPU. I found that if I went into the AMD Adrenaline ‘control panel’ I could ‘Tune Game Performance’ just for MSFS and by changing the automatic tuning to undervault the GPU for just this game I no longer get the reboots. I get a similar thing with 3DMark test suite, but not with any other game or app.

As I say this my not apply to you, but just putting it out there as a possible solution.

Hi.. may much simpler solution might be what we mentioned so often : set a usefull fps max limit, allways . I assume also these AMD software is able to do that like nvidias control panel.

Well, I think you could have a good point there. Especially the shutdown happened immediately after unpausing the sim. So a spike of some sort could really be the issue.
I tested with 3d mark, but I didn’t experience such a thing.

Will try the max fps setting like others suggested, and see if that helps.

Thanks for thinking along!

I think I found the issue. MSFS is pushing my PSU over the edge. I mainly use this PC as a studio PC and never had this issue. But MSFS in combination with the Pmdg 737 asked just a bit too much…
Today I installed a 1200w instead of the old 750w and at least it runs the main menu now (eventually it crashed even when starting MSFS). So that looks hopeful.

Will try a flight with the pmdg 737 this weekend. FIngers crossed…
