Conflict with FS2020, Microsoft Store/Xbox?

CTDs don’t come from overheating components. If i overheat my CPU the whole system will halt and give a blue screen. An unstable system will give a blue screen and/or instant reboot, not crash a single program with the rest of the system running perfectly fine.

Unstable software will crash or freeze when you change settings, install mods, or it it doesn’t like plugging in USB devices like MSFS does. If i plug in an XBOX controller the game will freeze for a while or sometimes even CTD, This problem hasn’t been solved since the launch of the game. Sometimes the memory usage will go up untill the memory is full (memory leaks). Sometimes there are bugs with GPS screens in the game (multiplayer bug), stutters, pauses, CTDs, there are a lot of different problems.

They should work on a quality update to make the sim more stable, maybe even change the way they do some things on a fundamental level.

I understand the engine this sim runs on is a generic game engine and they had to make a lot of things work with an engine that didn’t originally supported those features, but it seems like it’s all held together with duct tape. Even the loading of the program and the loading UI doesn’t look smooth.

Ok , good luck. Check also if you have issues with your Digital Ownership.

It’s Sunday afternoon, what better to do than load MSFS and do a couple of VFRs.

About 15 CTDs later (mostly in the main menu), I’m having second thoughts. Another Sunday afternoon wasted.

I’m sorry for you. There must be something out of order because I and many, many others find this the best sim ever, so 180 degrees different from your experience. I hope that you are able to sort things out with the help of people here. Good luck.

I think most here can agree this is the best sim. But i also think we can agree it’s not the most stable program in the world by far. Even before i had serious issues the menu’s always felt sluggish, sometimes the game had short freezes, especially when plugging USB devices or controllers etc.

The CTD’s for me started after the last World Update and it seems for others too. We must find what we have in common.

Since I made my pagefile.sys as big as the ram I have installed, I had no CTD at all for quite a long time.

The Microsoft store has always been a minefield, it’s a bit late for you now but I use Steam and it’s pretty much flawless

I had no CTD for a week after doing nothing at all. Problem came back seemingly without doing anything.

My 2 cents:

Indeed the best sim ever. I have a system similar to the OP, and I‘m lucky it runs rather stable.
The only thing I noticed lately is that I get the occasional CTD right AFTER a flight (when trying to go back to the main menu). Not much harm in this, but of course not what one would expect from a well behaved program…

One thing you could verify is if you Gaming Services are running. Go to task manager - services. If they are not, right click - start.
I saw some people recommending a full reset of the gaming services, sometimes it doesn’t fix that, hence the above.
Good luck, I hope you can get the sim running quickly!

Interesting. You mean Settings/Advanced settings like dialog below ? For me there’s a match (I have 16Gb) and I have had 4 CTD’s since november 2020 (that is nearly none compared with many others)

Have you reported this to Zendesk?

Yes, I adjusted the size and I moved the pagefile.sys to a seperate partition, to avoid any interferance with the systempartition, just in case something goes wrong when Windows writes to the pagefile.sys.

Can’t confirm separate partitions, I have only one partition in use. But it seems a good tip for stability !

I feel your pain.
I have installed it at least 10 times. Must be a glutton for punishment.
Thanks

I haven’t played for months. I would rather wait until they optimize this game or I would call dead game…

I just recently bought a new PC and needed to move FS2020 from one machine to another. I simply copied the FS2020 folder to an external drive which took around an hour, then on the new machine, ran the installer and let it install around 400MB, then paused it, exited, and copied the FS2020 folder to the new machine then re-ran the installer, and it recognised the rest of the installation and completed it from 99%.

I doubt the issue your having is with the whole file structure. It’s probably with the executable and just needs the main part re-installed.

Aside from bugs with Autopilot, ATC and trim weirdness which should have never happened in the first place with a flight sim this long in the making, my MSFS has at least worked and not crashed… until the recent World Update. Nothing changed in my system, community folder, etc. but the first 3 times I started a fight from Tucson in the Skyhawk 172 and set the nav frequencies, as soon as I hit the throttle it crashed. It HAS to be related to the update because this is a flight I regularly do…same aircraft, etc. As much as I love this sim, graphically, the bugs are very prohibitive to anything I try except the simplest VFR flight without ATC and nav functions.
It’s been over half a year. Come on. These basic problems should not still be happening. I have to agree that, except for the graphics, it is miles behind it’s competitors. A flight sim should NEVER be released until it competes or surpasses its competitors in the most “flight-sim” related departments, regardless of graphics. Unless, of course, your initial target audience was not serious simmers, but gamers. So many things (like no multi monitor support and ATC still not being to safely get you from point A to point B) suggest this was the case. Now they are trying to catch up. Let’s hope they do. They sound serious. It’s just a question of competency.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned here is that a lot of CTDs were caused by offline AI traffic. I don’t know what settings you’re using, but it you’re using that I’d recommend turning it off and just flying by yourself and with other players. The difference was night and day for me.
