Constant glitches and hitches navigating the main UI in all areas. Not a fluid responsive UX

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

All the time

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Use the UI navigate to main map, marketplace, aircraft browser.

  2. Perform actions, UI constantly hitches and hangs for short periods as described in the post links above.
    Some examples:

  • Going to marketplace can cause freezes for seconds at a time. It really breaks every convention of basic UI responses and fluid UX. Ditto going from marketplace back to main UI.
  • In main map, clicking ESC shows no reaction, hangs for a couple of seconds, you click again and it finally goes back to main menu showing the exit modal, which seems to have been triggered by a captured click when hung on the original esc from map screen.

By contrast, I get great performance in fly mode, no complaints. Except when pulling up the main menu again!

MEDIA

Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.
Not possible atm for video as it’s UX jittery and glitchy, as also observed by this user General SU5 Beta Feedback Thread - #2251 by NikitaSaxon

One key observation. Whenever I navigate back from one screen to another and it freezes, the debug menu freezes as well. It flashes red briefly when the UI revives itself ~2+ secs later post freeze. This is the only time I’ve seen the debug menu freeze like that. Even in fly mode when performance is degraded (say overload deliberately on the settings to ultra and hit up a graphics intensive city, but still flyable FPS < 30fps) debug menu won’t freeze, but will still run showing lots of red etc.
This likely indicates a blocking call in the UI pipeline.
Here’s a snapshot of the debug menu running normally on the main menu, no addons in community prior to hitting esc.

Here’s an F12 screenshot I grabbed just as it revived and flashed red for a split second before coming alive again.

No performance issues (UI or otherwise) with other sims or AAA games on high/ultra settings.

Hi folks,

We can see this forum thread now has 7 votes, but we’d love to hear some more feedback from players regarding if they are able to reproduce the initial report, and whether this is something they’ve noticed to be a regression in Sim Update 5 Beta?

Cheers

*Edit

I just went back and tested 1.7.17 on my hardware and I no longer have the hitching or delays the OP was referring to. My apologies. I think this most recent build fixed it, at least for me.

I think it would be useful to detail your specs and key settings (at least the ones I submitted in my OP) even if you don\t appear to have the issue.

From my investigation so far, it does appear to perhaps be a UI thread blocking issue on the main UI (which means it needs an MSFS fix), but maybe it’s not as apparent under certain conditions, or it drops to withing “acceptable response” thresholds for people that it doesn’t seem to affect.

But it seems the debug menu freezing is a key clue to this, so whatever is happening under the hood at that point in time could be the key differentiator, as well as user hardware and bandwidth performance. Maybe “it’s a feature, not a bug” and just becomes more apparent with a certain combination of these. I don’t know, but it’s certainly noticeable with my UI UX now. My 2 yen. :person_shrugging:

I don’t think this is related to the OP issue, but glad you resolved it.

I guess my post didn’t count as jittery and glitchey.

It wasn’t me that flagged it, but if you read my issue description it’s a completely different issue.
Mine is specifically about what appears to be UI thread blocking that causes hitches/glitches in navigating from one main menu UI screen to another, resulting in a very frustrating UX.
Actually, it is described in the title as well.

Yours is an interesting glitch I haven’t seen before but it’s a different type of issue.
It’s important that bugs are scoped to specific issues even if they may be in same category, as that’s the only way to keep them focused.

Interesting. I haven’t used dynamic settings for a long time, but this thread popped up again the other day so thought I’d see if that made any difference: Max out your TLOD and OLOD with Dynamic settings

I just tried it, flight was great, but when I ended flight and went back to main menu all menus are now completely gone. Not sure if it’s related to my OP, but I would call it an extreme glitch in that case. Will do some more with dynamic settings on/off. Other people are using it just fine, so must be some edge case of settings, I guess.

Update: Unable to reproduce, so file under "glitch":person_shrugging:

Still getting the hitches in the menu transitions, at least that’s consistent!
