Constant Random CTD

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

CTD’s occur at random times, sometimes in a main menu, during all stages of a flight. I’ve tried different aircraft, weather, happens in free flight and career. Sometimes its a CTD sometimes screen goes black and PC restarts, sometimes BSOD.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

Empty community folder

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Usually every time, they’re random. sometimes I’m able to complete multiple flights other times I can’t get off the ground. sometimes there in a menu, sometimes while starting a flight and loading in. sometimes while navagiating through menus before a flight (like maintaining aircraft in my companies, looking at new airplanes to buy etc)

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Start MSFS 2024
  2. proceed to start flight
  3. high likelihood it’ll crash, just to what extent

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• No

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• I never have a CTD in 2024. Also after multiple hours, multiple flights, going in or out VR

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

You could try lower your MEM clock a bit to like 5700 MHz and see if that makes a difference.

lowered to 5700, I’ll give it a shot

I managed to get 2 flights done in the Vision Jet. I just had a CTD in the Vision Jet during the Descent when I zoomed out on the MFD. Zooming out to about the 40nm rand ring is when it crashed. I had that happen before but only now was really paying attention to everything I was doing in the sim.

Update:
just tried a cargo mission in the Caravan, Got halfway through the mission(about 1 hour into cruise) everything going well until I zoomed in on the MFD, frozen then CTD. Is there a bug for CTD when zooming on the MFD?

I think I found a band aid, I disabled XMP in BIOS and have now completed 2 cargo missions and I’m on my 3rd now. I haven’t touched the zoom on the PFD though but I’m now able to get through a whole flight. I set the zoom range ring to about 25nm and leave it there.

I had constant CTD’s when I started playing MSFS24.
I’m on an i7-14700KF with an ASUS motherboard.

It turned out that settings on the ASUS MB were causing the Intel CPU to run at higher limits than Intels default/recommended settings… This was causing the processor to overvolt/heat (not sure exactly what) and CTD.

I updated my bios (it was rather out of date) and the update contained a specific option within bios to turn off ‘ASUS Advanced OC Profile’ and change it to use ‘Intel default’ setting instead.

I’ve only had a random crash or 2 since fixing it weeks ago, so safe to say this was the problem in my case and it sounds like the problem extends to all 13/14th gen Intel processors combined with (perhaps certain) ASUS motherboards.

Hope this helps!!

I updated my BIOS to the latest version from ASUS and disabled XMP, I recall seeing the overclock seeing and it is on “Intel default”. I know the 14th Gen processors had an serious issue with overvolting and killing CPU’s but I believe that was remedied within the last few months with updates.

So far I’ve made sure my BIOS is up to date, my Nvidia drivers are up to date, Windows is up to date and reduced my memory clock from 6000Mhz to 5700Mhz in the BIOS. I disabled XMP this morning and so far have had 3 good flights today, Had one crash early on but disabling XMP seems to have been a big factor in stability.

I also just checked via Hardware Monitor and my CPU hasn’t gotten above 83C and the GPU hasn’t gotten above 68C with 2024 running for the last 5 hours. Considering I’m only running a 280mm AIO cooler that CPU temp is nice since the 14th gen i9 love to run hot

Nice one bud - Hopefully you can get some stable flying in now!!

There’s nothing worse than constant crashing, and not knowing exactly what’s causing it.. especially given the long bootup time of MSFS.. I got too-well-acquainted with the intro video / loading screen for a few days of solid CTD and testing different things, until I eventually figured it out!

Prior to realising I needed the bios update and the Intel default setting… I was underclocking my CPU using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and that was providing stability, but obviously at the expense of some performance.
Sounds like you’re over the worst of it now, but just throwing that out there if someone else comes across the thread and it helps at all.

Happy flying!

Spoke too soon :sob: Just had 2 crashes back to back. one in the companies menu and one after selecting a freelance mission from the world map. the mission crash slowed to 1FPS then froze and crashed

Bummer :frowning:

If it were me, I’d try using the Intel XTU to reduce the clock speed to see if that helps keep it stable.
It shouldn’t still be an issue if the bios is set to the Intel default limits, but I’d defo still be trying it, just to try and rule out the CPU completely.
For reference: Mine ran default x55 core ratio and I think I put it down to x52.

I also upgraded Nvidia driver to 566.14 and found that (both before I found the issue and after I resolved it) that my performance seemed worse than with my older driver I had been using for a long time, so I’m currently running 555.99 and it runs stable. Just another thing you could consider/try I guess!

Good luck!!

Just installed XTU I’ll give it a shot.

I’ve never had good luck updating Nvidia drivers as soon as their released, always run into issues. My current driver is fairly recent (released 12/3/2024) and just check and there is a new one released 12/10/2024. If all else fails I’ll give it a shot as i can always roll it back

checked out XTU but can’t seem to adjust my core clock speed or core ratios

My P-Cores are at 57x and my E-Cores are at 44x

everything is greyed out, says undervoltage protection is enabled, any idea how to disable it?

now it seems less stable, I’m crashing when selecting a flight, 3 times in a row. select a flight, as the map zooms in to the overview it studders then crashes

ok, I think I narrowed down part of the crashes. zooming on the PFD in flight causing CTD. I was just in free flight in the corvalis cruising at 17,500. been in cruise for about 20min, zoomed out and when the range ring hit 40nm the sim froze and CTD.

Maybe a G1000 bug? Its happening too frequently and specifically to be chance IMO

I’ve also noticed that when MSFS crashes it usually causes the webpages I have open in Opera GX to crash as well

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• This is completely random. No crashes in a couple of weeks, then today I had a crash caused by module CoherentUIGT.dll.
Annoying to say the least..

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Do you have XMP for your RAM enabled in the BIOS? Turn it off. I had it enabled and CTDs are gone. (I run AMD so in my case it was an EXPO profile, for Intel it is XMP). I also highly recommend to NOT limit your framrates in the Nvida app/settings.

Best regards

I did this back in the beginning of January and it fixed my issues, Haven’t had a CTD or BSOD since then

I disabled XMP, hyper threading off(I don’t think I had it on to begin with but it is definitely off now) reduced active cores from 32 to 30 (I don’t remember where this setting was but Google will bring you to a YouTube video showing how) then I reduced my P Core ratio from 57 (5.7GHz) to 55(5.5GHz).

Since I first did this over 2 weeks ago now I haven’t had a single CTD.

My setup
i9-14900KF
Asus ROG Strix MB
4080 Super
32GB DDR5 6000Mhz RAM
2tb m.2 SSD
850w power supply.

I haven’t had a BSOD, random restart or CTD in any game since. I also DO NOT notice any performance hit

Moved to User Support Hub since a solution has been marked by OP.
