Could collision detection be enabled for Wind Turbine blades?

Low priority wish/request…

Wondering if collision detection can be enabled for Wind Turbine blades?

I was just flying a “slalom” at a wind farm. Like something out of a James Bond movie😊

Not sure if it’s possible to detect collision on an animated object? And then enable it globally for all of those objects?

Clearly a low priority request (if it can be done at all).

Thank you!

I have often wondered if I hit one of these turbines would I crash or just pass through it. Based on the above post a collision with a turbine is not detected or a danger. Is this right? I have never tried it to see. Don’t want to lose the flight and do a restart.

I’ll speculate and say that in order for this to work, each blade (and the turbine tower) would require an individual crash box. Computing when a crash would occur between a number of moving objects (aircraft & blades) might be CPU intensive, but probably would not impact performance too much - if at all - when the aircraft is in the vicinity of a single wind turbine sitting in the middle of a field.

The difficulty arises when the aircraft approaches a wind turbine wind farm that may have 10’s or 100’s of turbines. Trying to compute if the aircraft has hit any one of those 100’s or 1000’s of spinning blades probably would tank ones’ performance as the CPU tries to work out all that math.

So, IMO, this wish is unlikely to ever be implemented with the current available hardware. Five or ten years from now - who knows?
