CPU upgrade worthwhile?

My current CPU is an i7 950 (4 core, 8 threads) oc’d to 4.3 ghz. GPU is a GTX 1650 Super. 24 gb RAM. I have a chance to buy a 990X Extreme CPU (6 core, 12 threads) at a reasonable price. It’s a simple drop in replacement without having to change the MB. Would the 990X be a worthwhile upgrade over the 950? Also - should Hyperthreading in the BIOS be turned on or off with these CPU’s? Thanks.

Buy the CPU.

Turn ON hyperthreading.

Enjoy but you’ll prolly be GPU bound…

Not sure what you mean by “reasonable price”, but this upgrade will give your PC some boost for sure.

Ok thanks guys. The 990X CPU would be under $100.

I had i7-930 and was considering upgrade to i7-970, but couldn’t find it under $50 and ended up with complete PC upgrade to i7-9700K

Digging up an old thread, OP did you end up upgrading to the 990X?

However I’m curious before you did upgrade, did FS2020 work on your 950?

That’s the same cpu ive got and Im curious if I update my GPU to 1050ti 4gb if I will be able to run it?

Looked at the 990X and second hand they are still around $300 so rather just do the GPU for now

Cheers

I paid $149 on eBay for my 990X from a US seller which is easy to OC to 4.5 ghz and it runs MSFS just fine. I also upgraded my GPU to an RTX 2060. The 950 will run the game but the 990X is much stronger.

990x never heard of it on paper looks better than the recommended i5 8400 but bench scores its 20% slower than the 8400 in gaming and what you want is a cpu with the best single threaded performance which also minimizes bottlenecking to the GPU.
-10% i5 8400 paired with an 2060
-30% 990x paired with a 2060.You loose about a good 20-30fps paired with that CPU.
Invest in a more recent i7 or ryzen chip. You are going to get a significant performance uplift.
