With my usual caveat that I don’t use third party planes or airports, I’m happy to report excellent performance and stability on Series X this afternoon, using the latest beta. 747 from Dublin to Boston with no performance issues or black screens despite the long flight time and the descent and approach over a photogrammetry city putting the old 'Box through its paces. Long may it continue!
I’m definitely getting fewer crashes. But I was having 2-3 crashes a night with the earliest beta builds. Now I am down to 2 or so a week.
The suggestions above to only install airports that will be used during a particular flight is something that has crossed my mind previously, but then I thought to myself, can airports that are far away from your location really affect the sim performance/stability? Isn’t it only stuff in your vicinity that is used by the xbox ram memory? That was my guess so I kept all 3rd party airports installed, at least those I know are stable on an individual basis.
For what it’s worth: just had a CTD in the LVFR A321 when taxiing to the gate(first in ages), flying from Vancouver 3rd party to Chicago(Asobo handcrafted). There goes almost 4 hours of flighttime🤨. So, it’s not all hallelujah, even in SU11. Perhaps I must lower my sliders also to the 20 ish…
Those CTD’s, man I can’t stand them. If there is one thing so much frustrating, this is it!
Yeah 4hrs that’s hard to swallow that one.I just ctd on final to Dublin from Frankfurt wasn’t happy as was in the vision jet G2 so was slower flight
Rolling cache off. No crashes so far.
Kind of. In a perfect world this would always be the case.
But when you need to debug it is best practice to remove these things. Why? Because you are trying to quell a bug. Things are not working as they should. And by slowly installing and testing as you go, you can find some offending addons, delete them, and maybe solve your problems.
Folks who buy a lot of airports often buy all airports in one city, or on one island, where more than one airport would be within the LOD radius, so often you can have several airports loaded at once. Perhaps they have city scenery packs installed too.
If you have a lot of airports and you fly a long haul, you might be loading airports you never intend to visit on your current flight, but now that addon is part of your flight, so if it isn’t stable… there goes your flight.
3rd party devs vary in quality and talent. And they can sometimes cause bugs or conflicts with other plugins and whatnot. Sim updates might cause new issues with plugins. And plugin makers aren’t always quick to update or patch.
That’s the thing about bugs. The software isn’t working as intended so it can start to do things outside the parameters of what you would normally expect. Conflicting addons seem fairly common since the sim released. Like, just having a specific two plugins installed together leads to CTD.
Scenery collectors can buy hundreds or thousands of airports. The odds of a conflict increase with the number of plugins one has installed, and there are too many variables for anyone to test them all. Everyone has a different collection of plugins. So it is up to us to do our own debugging sometimes, and to look for conflicting addons within our own collection. It is up to us to do our own curation of our collection.
I don’t do a lot of airports personally. Instead I buy all kinds of planes. And sometimes I just have to put one in the hangar for a few months because of a conflict.
So TLDR: No, far away airports don’t all load. But by deleting and meticulously re-installing and testing each airport, you can find the ones that always make you CTD, and there is no sense keeping those airports on your SSD if they only result in a crash. And if something bigger starts to go wrong, like suddenly you start to CTD every time you fly, that can point to your most recently installed airports causing some sort of conflict. There is no sense in keeping those on your SSD until they get fixed. If you just install everything all at once and you experience problems, there is no real way to find the source(s) of your problems. We don’t need to debug when everything is working as intended. You know? So when you need to debug, clean out the offending addons as you find them. You should have a MUCH more stable experience. Confirm every addon works, and that it works when all your other addons are installed. Put the rest in the hangar until they get patched.
Fewer add-ons installed lead to shorter start up times also.
Using Xbox X….After deleting all 3rd party and just adding a few that I would use when flying seems to have helped with ctd’s. (after latest beta release) Airports that would not even load are working. LOD seems to be much better also. Night flying is much improved but approach strobes seem to be a lot dimmer imho. This is with sliders at mostly 75 for vehicles and 100 for fauna. Sim is fluid and the clouds and atmosphere are stunning especially with the full moon in the last few days.
May I ask, which airports you kept installed? Night lightning, can you now see the lights from further distances away? This is what annoys me the most in SU11.
Hi Guys,
I’ve spent a couple of days testing since the last update and CTD at 3rd parity airports have reduced drastically since the 9th Jan update. I have no idea why but here are my notes. We know that the Xbox is highly sensitive to memory issues and 3rd party airports that aren’t efficiently optimised. This build seems the most stable and forgiving yet. The 4th Jan release was the worse for me with lots of CTD at 3rd Party Airports -12 were unusable and lots of micro stutters in the NY area. No micro stutters now in the NY area and only 2 airports causing CTD for me.
As you can see I have a lot of adds ons - enough to potentially cause lots of issues but we know from what many have said that the main culprits are 3rd party airports that are poorly optimised for XBox and some complex aircraft. I have not deleted any add ons for this test. I loaded each airport fresh with both the Cirrus and a310 start up and taxi and take off. The release notes said their had been some stability improvement for X Box users and we know avionics have been tweaked.
I hope you can see the image of the spreadsheet you will need to magnify as I cannot load up a pdf.
I’ll keep it updated and hope it’s useful to the discussions. I’m on an X Box X with a 700MB wired connection. I don’t use cache.
Wow. So very helpful! Thank you so much. If I could give you a trillion hearts, I did👍
You convinced me to jump back in the beta again. Even Athens by FlyTampa works?
Hi
I was having trouble with KMIA and YSSY in particular a lot of stock airports also TNCM, VHHX we’re causing issues. I have other airports that were off and on. Night lightning is much improved and more realistic in the distance. I also believe servers play a roll as last evening I had no pop ups at all whereas sometimes you have some scenery morphing. It’s not perfect but it is a vast improvement. I agree with others that there are so many variables that can effect performance but it’s an epic achievement for it to be this good on a console.
Yes I was amazed that’s been a pain since day one. But on my one test of it it was fine - but word of caution every persons XBox will have different stuff which is why it’s so hard to pinpoint issues - but this latest update is a step in the right direction.
Thanks the both of you. I must experience for myself. Going to install the beta again, after my flight is finished.
Fingers crossed I hope it all works for you! It’s such a lottery!
Very good you have all the regional airports environments addons, and the improved runways etc etc. We can rule them out now.
One question : what’s your slider settings at? Specifically ground vehicles.
I ve not had any issues with these accept Enhanced Airports which updated last week and I thought that was causing an issue but having removed it made no difference for me so it’s wasn’t the issue. The 4th Jan beta wasn’t good but the latest is much better. I’m not celebrating yet let’s see what others say and what happens from now to SU12 but I’m hopeful!
Everything at max - which might be foolish but the advantage of being on console re PC is that I dont have to guess and fiddle settings - I can just fly! I spent years on PC adjusting and obsessing over options and frame rates - I don’t wish to go back there. No disrespect to the PC platform - we all wish for the same a great looking stable sim!
