CTD when starting flight using DLSS in MSFS 2020 and Nvidia 577.00

Until this morning I had been running MSFS 2020 with the latest Nvidia driver with DX12. It was exhibiting some odd stuttering on a flight and I had remembered from way back that DX12 on 2020 does still have some issues. So I decided to roll back to driver 577.0 in order to get back to DX11 but ever since then I have not been able to fly anything that uses DLSS, TAA mode is fine. If I use DLSS I get the dreaded DXGI device Hung error and CTD. I am aware of the Nvidia app issue with DX 11 and later drivers so have not installed the Nvidia app. Tried all sorts of things including changing DLSS back to the original versions using DLSS swapper but no good. I also think I remember somewhere that certain version of Nvidia put or leave DLSS files in different places and some people manually deleted some folders (or something like that).

Does anyone know if there is an extra step I need to make when rolling back from 581.29 to 577.00 that relates to DLSS specifically. I used DDU to clear things out and am using an RTX 5090 here and 14900K. MSFS 2024 works fine also but of course that is DX 12. This is not in VR although that has the same result.

An update from this mornings playing. Did a complete DDU removal in safe mode again of the driver and also cleared shader cache while I was at it. Rebooted and straight into MSFS 2020 and i managed to enter a flight in DLSS mode!! Great I said but of course after closing the sim and doing the exact same thing again, I got the DXGI crash.

This is reminiscent of an issue I had recently with newer Nvidia drivers while trying to use msfs 2020 in DX11 mode in that earlier drivers like 577.00 must have the Nvidia app not installed to run up but the later drivers started causing the same effect whether the app is installed or not but only on the second run of the sim, the first run of the sim worked ok. I half concluded that something that the sim does on shutdown after the first run was doing some form of tidy up that then causes problems on subsequent runs. There were changes in SU16 to fix the shutdown problem the sim had and my guess is there is a repercussion to that fix.

The odd thing here is that I was on 577.00 until fairly recently with no issues but now after having moved to the very latest driver and then reverted, I cannot now run the sim at all.

Any thoughts or ideas on something else I could try would be greatly received!!

Cheers

I’ve got an RTX 4090 and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and I don’t even think about DLSS. Our GPUs are so powerful that using DLSS feels like a crime

You are absolutely right as far as 2D goes, that is pretty much maxed out and using TAA. However, VR with a Pimax Crystal Super trying to use full res is another kettle of fish!

That’s true, VR really pushes our hardware to the absolute limit. I assume you’re on driver 577.00 right now?

Did you go into graphics settings in the sim and select DX11? And then exit the sim and restart? And with any Nvidia driver install I select custom and do a clean reinstall of everything except the GeForce Experience (I never use it).

My rig is fairly humble by today’s standards (GeForce 2080Ti 64 Gb RAM and Intel i9) but it always runs the latest driver. However I also never set frame rate limits inside the game - only in the Nvidia control panel that can be called up on the desktop when nothing is running (where I set 1/2 monitor rate). In game I can run in ultra but prefer high end for most graphics settings with bloom and motion blur off and about mid-setting for air/airport/road & sea traffic.

Also after every graphics card update it seems to help if we start the sim, select a different graphics setting (ultra or low or whatever), use briefly, exit sim, restart and set up preferences again - a pain I know but after all the above no CTDs, no stutters except rarely in big scenery areas and smooth visuals. Hope this helps

No, not being able to use DX11 with 577.00 in FS20 I have again gone back to 581.29 in the hope of getting other fixes or enhancements. Am also now using FS24 more and more and performance there with the Pimax is very good at the moment not withstanding all the frame limit issues it has.

As mentioned earlier I used DDU to remove old driver and install 577 but probably didn’t change many settings in the sim before trying to enter a flight. I do remember way back that sometimes changing settings in 2D and then going back to VR did seem to improve things but not had that experience recently. Will maybe have another go at reverting and see what happens this time!

The interesting aspect of this is that it is DX 11 and DLSS related specifically, if I use DX12 or TAA I can enter a flight fine.

On some hardware configurations MSFS 2020 will certainly not work with DX11 on the latest driver, or any driver newer than 577.00.

Did you have the NVIDIA app installed?

No, I am fully aware of the combinations of driver and Nvidia app, it is not installed and the 577 driver in theory should work with DX 11 and did so when I first used it but since then I updated to the latest. My issue is in reverting from the latest to 577 and then not being able to enter a flight if using DLSS.

Go to the models folder, which you can find at:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA\NGX

Take a screenshot of the models folder and attach it in your reply.

Ok. Sequence as follows:

1 Screenshot of models folder for driver 581.29 attached

2. Updated DDU to version 18.1.3.2 and removed driver 581.29 followed by reboot

3. Installed driver 577.00 without Nvidia app

4. Screenshot of models folder for driver 577.00 and also the DLSS versions folder within it.

5. Spin up FS20 and set DX 11 and restart sim

6. 2D settings set to TAA

7. Enter flight and sim runs up fine.

8. Stop flight and set DLSS Quality

9. Enter flight and it also runs fine !!!

10. Remembering things often work for first run, restart sim

11. Enter flight and sim crashes with DXGI hung device error

So that it what I get, very interested in your thoughts on the models folder.

Thanks for your help here.

And this one of models folder after crash

In the models folder there are subfolders. I take it that the ones dated yesterday, September 20, are the latest driver, and the ones dated today are driver 577.00?

Correct, I had put 581.29 back yesterday.

Launch MSFS 2020, go to the settings, select DX12, save the changes, then quit to desktop.
Launch MSFS.

Yes, that scenario works and has always worked, it is DX 11 I am trying to use which used to work but now doesn’t when using DLSS.

Could you please share screenshots of your MSFS graphics settings?

As requested

Please do not test MSFS with Developer Mode enabled.

Share DDU settings.

Ok. repeated without developer mode, same result.

Here are DDU settings
