CTD when the computer is off for some time!

I’m of the opinion that power is the problem. Are you running them all off the same power supply, i.e. one electrical socket? Try starting the PCs up one at a time, loading at least as far as the World Map screen before trying the next one.

Frankly I thought MSFS wouldn’t start up without an internet connection, mine won’t, but I suppose it is possible somehow although without access to the on-line scenery etc. the game is worthless. Would re-installing involve internet in which case everything is then refreshed?

That’s the bit that makes no sense.

If you use the sim, turn the computer off for 5 minutes, restart the PC, and the sim launches fine, then that 5 minutes may as well be six months from the computers perspective as nothing has changed except the time.

Identifying what, and if, something is getting refreshed would be relevant. The Internet has to be used to update the sim to current versions, so at some point that has to happen.

If it were just a power issue, then the setup shouldn’t work at all, no matter how short a time between sessions they were left off.

If it weren’t for the fact that it sometimes works, and works offline, I would have suggested it could be a networking issue, and possibly there is an issue with seven machines on the same network trying to launch MSFS, behind the same NAT router.

@FAVEB What happens if you fire up one system in isolation, get it to the main menu, then start the second, and so on?

It would also be worth knowing what the error message is in the event log.

This PowerShell command will give you a list of all relevant events, essentially where FlightSimulator.exe has generated an event with id 1000, and print out the date stamp, so we could see how often this occurs, as well as the related message, which will show the exception code.

(Get-EventLog -LogName Application -InstanceId 1000 | Where-Object {$_.Message -like "*Flightsimulator.exe*"}) | select-object TimeWritten,Message | fl *

I don’t have MSFS installed here at work, but this is what I see if I change the command to look for Chrome. You will see there were two occurences, both with code “0xc0000005”:

During that 5+ minutes, the computer will be starting to cooling down ?

It’s not unheard of for thermal issues to manifest, but on seven systems at once? One dodgy motherboard/memory module, for sure, and a warmed up system works well until it cools to ambient. But seven seems doubtful.

If you use the sim, turn the computer off for 5 minutes, restart the PC, and the sim launches fine,

Even for one two days the sim launches fine.

But let it off more two weeks and try…

When you have access to them again, please run that command I listed above. One system should suffice.

No explanation as to why time would be factor here, not on those intervals at least.

When they are off, are they still connected to mains power? Not sure why it would cause this, but maybe the CMOS battery is failing, and the clock is getting reset. If you don’t have them on the network, then they can’t reach a time server to reset it. When you put them back on the Internet, they reach a timeserver when you are busy reinstalling MSFS.

But again, seven failing RTC’s at the same time…also you might get a more generic message on screen when they start indicating other BIOS settings had got reset, which could potentially even stop the machine from booting, depending on how you have them configured to begin with.

Thanks, I’ll do it

Me neither ! but t’hat’s a fact

When they are off, are they still connected to mains power?

No they are not , they are stored in locked cupboards

but maybe the CMOS battery is failing, and the clock is getting reset…

I thought of the clock drifting , but couldn’t find any evident issue there

We never had such a BIOS message, except once when a battery had to be replaced…

Just IMHO, the sim might need to connect to the internet once in a while in order to authenticate with the server. So is your installation from Steam, MS Store, or disk?

Network card going to sleep ??

business-commerce-inactivity-sleep_mode-asleep-sleepy-screensavers-bve0194_low1

It is MS Store

I’m pretty sure MS Store will force a server validation during launch, probably once a week-ish. I’ve had CTDs when MSFS fails to connect to the network.

Edit: I’m not sure I read everything correctly, but how does OP reinstall the sim without network connection?

I had a break once from the sim for three months or so.

The sim connected fine apart from having to update. Steam version. Maybe the Store version works differently though.

Of course, we connect the PC’s to the network to reinstall…

So did you launch the sim with internet connection and it still crashed?

Yes !!! most of the time…

Here are the logs :
for October 25th, 2023 and July 24th, 2023 when the CTD happened

Not the code I was expecting, but certainly better than 0xc0000005.

You’ll see that “breakpoint” error come up all over the forums. It is sometimes accompanied by a GUI pop-up window. There will be a ton of potential fixes for this, one of which was to uninstall the Nordics world update.

Have you changed the handling of virtual memory from “Automatic”?

I just checked on the PC wich gave the reported CTD erros, and the “Total paging file size for all drives” box is Checked (“Automatically…”).

Thanks for checking. I’m running out of things to suggest, other than searching the forums for any posts mentioning “0xc0000003”.

Interestingly, if you run a Google/Bing search for “0xc0000003 CTD”, the top two links are both to the MSFS forums.

I started to do it… There are tons of them !
