Yesterday I installed a new GPU: RTX 3070ti instead of my RTX 3060ti.
But with that new 3070ti card installed, I can’t launch MSFS2020 anymore. It loads all the splash screens fine, but shortly before the menue should be loaded, I get a CTD. No error messages. It just crashes. Everytime. Even in “safe mode”.
I changed the card back to the RTX 3060ti and MSFS loads fine.
Why could this happen?
It must be related to the 3070ti in some way, but the card seems to perform absolutely fine in any other app. I tested it with the Cyberpunkt2077 game: No problem.
I ran some 3DMark benchmarks: Also fine, card performed as it should.
So far I can’t see any issues with the card EXECPT for the fact that MSFS crashes when loading.
I also tried two different Nvidia drivers. No change.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Here is my crash event log of the CTD of MSFS:

First of all, pull the internet from the PC, go into save mode and use DDU to get rid of the old graphic card driver, reboot normally but still offline, install the new driver.
I doubt that since I have a 750 W unit that should be (officially) plenty for the RTX 3070ti.
But to be sure: How can I check the total consumption of my system?
That’s really odd. I usually uninstall the driver before shutdown. Remove the old card and install the new one. Then install the drivers again. However this is the same brand name usually doesn’t have a issue. Nice to see the DDU program. I would think if Windows is running fine with the new card not sure why msfs 2020 would get upset. Is there a application that test graphics cards to see if they are doing what they should be doing after installation
the new card is also Nvidia and it is the same driver and these dangerous DDU stuff is not necessary. If you can simple re-install the normal driver and select the “reset choice”.
Can you open the UserCfg.opt and check which “Adapter” is mentioned ?
Have you ensured that tools like Afterburner are not running ?
Also go into nvidia control center an reset settings in case you former set one.
You can also set for a test-case a fps limit to a lower value ( e.g. 30 ) , which reduce a bit the load of the card ( in case there is a issue here ).
Also In case you have Geforce Experiance Running, check that Auto-Optimze is still off…
You could try and under volt the graphics card slightly (using something like MSI afterburner), there are some video’s out there on how to do it, and it’s free. If that works, then you will need a new PSU. I had this on my 3090 and undervolted the card, something to do with transient spikes. I’ve since replaced my PSU so no longer need to.
Regarding HWInfo64: Where can I see the total Watt that are consumed by my system?
I do have HWInfo64 but I’m not familiar with it and don’t see the total wattage.
Could you maybe send me a screenshot where I find the total?
Thanks a lot
I don’t think there is a “total” option. You can enable power dissipation in the individual HW sections. You could also graph them and see how they change over time and while you are loading and trying to launch the sim.
as mentioned… do a test-cases with limiting fps in nvidia-controll-center… if msfs will start, you know you have possible a power issue ( overheat would be also possible ).
This just anecdotal, but I checked my system during program loading, and the peak CPU and GPU power coincides with the main menu appearing. See attached image. Blue vertical line is main menu.
For lack of any better hypothesis, I’m still thinking this is power related.
Guys, I think I got it!
It works again (fingers crossed it stays that way)
I tried two things and, silly me, in the end I’m not sure which one actually did the trick.
I reinstalled the Nvidia driver (with the “reset” option to force a fresh install)
I also deactivated the steam Cloud backup and deleted the steam local backup since I found I thread that this helped somebody against CTD to restore the sim
Now, since I’m tired and did so many restarts, I unfortunatelly don’t remember if I did thouse things seperatly or together and therefore I’m not sure what actually did the trick. Stupid.
But it was one of thouse two things and it seems (so far) it was not a power related thing.
I will mark this as solution even though I’m not sure which one of these two things actually did the trick.
Thank you all for your help!!
Unplug and re-seat your graphics card power cable. It is unlikely, but not impossible, that a poor connection is delivering enough power for Cyberpunk but not enough for MSFS.
edit - missed the last two posts, gj and gl!
Had similar stability issues in the past.
Deinstall nvidia drivers and reinstall “clean” (withouth past config)
When running any overclocking, stop it. Even if it runs Furmark good over an hour… it will crash in MSFS due to different components get stressed (as i imagine).
To get to a safe state limit your framerate to 30fps. This gives the CPU /GPU some ressources to smooth out frametimes and gives you a solid base to improve on.
If this all doesn’t help, Windows is clocking up with ■■■■, reinstalls something does the trick as a last resort.
Have fun!
Can someone PLEASE set out for me the EXACT steps for a clean reinstall of Nvidia graphics drivers. I am not a computer person. I am not aware of the ‘reset’ option mentioned by TheRealoOli4D. I have had recurring CTD issues caused I think by the driver but have been unable to isolate or permanently fix the problem. I have today uninstalled and reinstalled the last 8 versions of the driver without effect, but on reading this thread I suspect there might be more to creating the proper clean instal than I have been doing. Help please
Thanks
