Current fastest Ryzen with APU for simming

Hi pilots,

I am thinking of a little CPU upgrade, but I insist of always having a second graphics chip in my PC (for older games like Dishonored II, FFXV, Tomb Raider and more).
Ultrasilent gaming with 65 watts power consumption is possible when using such a Ryzen APU!

Does anyone have this Ryzen - is it not only a good graphics chip but also a high performance CPU, how fast is it for simming?
My Ryzen 5 2400G Zen I is getting a little bit outdated and the computer needs more power…

I have a AMD RX7900XTX which runs at 9W idle. So how do you want to beat that? I think you are solving a problem that doesn’t exist.

Hi,

I tend to agree with @krflyer,
In low performance situations with old games the fans of my graphics card only run at the lowest level and the system is inaudible. But it is a powerful card.

If I understand you correctly you already have a dedicated GPU in addition to your Ryzen 2400G, right?
The main issue I see here, is whether you will be happy with MSFS. Integrated graphics solution are always a mixed bag and take away something from the CPU.
So if you play a lot of MSFS - in my opinion - you’d far better off in the long run with a X3D CPU, since MSFS relies on CPU power so much more than most other games.

Just to give you an example:
Even with a 7950X3D and a RTX 4090 you will be main-thread limited (= CPU-limited) in MSFS even if everything is set on Ultra and you keep your LOD levels above 200.

In addition this CPU you show up there is 2 years old. If money is the issue, and you already have a good graphics card for MSFS, get yourself the 5800X3D. It’s a little more expensive but having tested multiple CPUs with MSFS I can safely say, the 5800X3D will significantly outperform that 5700G due to the X3D component which MSFS makes very good use of - again more so than most other games.

You could probably reduce the performance of the discrete GPU to a level where it’s relatively silent and still get better performance than any APU.

No I try to solve a problem I created by myself: My preference for flight simulation demands an APU in the computer  just to have it as backup.

This can turn out really useful for example when selling a graphics card for the best price before a new series is released that would significantly lower the price. I can still game and sim on an APU for a few months and fully use the PC with no liminations, while with CPU only I don´t even get a HDMI signal to the screen.

But you are maybe right… for the absolute maximum of performance one of the Ryzen X3D will be absolutely necessary.

For the argument you make, well, I was in this situation some weeks ago, when I had to RMA my AMD RX650XT which had a vapor chamber problem. I was out of a video card for a week. But for a future situation, I’d rather have a very old card handy to plug in. The point is clear: why buy a CPU chip which reserves some silocon space for a GPU? You would rather have more / faster cores (I run the AMD 5800X3D). When it does not need all that raw power and frame rate, obviously, it clocks down and uses far less power. As a matter of fact, this is all done in a fan profile. The AMD GPU’s use Adrenalin to control fan speed, and gues what, the default is 0 RPM for low temperatures. I found out while troubleshooting that hot headed RX6950XT. So, it can be totally silent, and default, the fans will never go to 100% speed. So even my RX7900XTX runs at 0RPM, which means no noise at all. At full power (350W) obviously it needs some cooling, but at that time, I’ll be listening to my VR headset’s speakers, and I don’t even notice. So, make a sensible decision, based on a real good case before buying a CPU which is totally unfit for the job. Spare tyres belong in the trunk, not on your rear axle.

I believe all the Ryzen 7000 cpus have an igpu. Turn it off in BIOS if not needed. Turn it on if you need it as a backup. Lots of great performance comments in these forums for the 7800X3D and I bet almost none of them have not even bothered turning the igpu off. Turning on Eco mode reduces the cpu heat/fan noise considerably.

I have a 7900X3D on a 280 aio cooler. Zero noise from the rad fans (push/pull). All my fan noise comes from the 3080ti, however I am gpu bound running VR.

Well, I didn’t know that. You are correct, so the best CPU if you start from scratch would be the 7800X3D or 7900X3D depending on budget.

For just Fs2020 the 7800X3D is the better CPU due to having 8 cores with the extra cache. The 7900X3D has 6 cores with the extra cache but each core has more cache. I suggest some research other than just cost between these two CPUs.

to elaborate, the 5800X3D comes with a 96mb L3 Cache. Basically the CPU can store a large amount of data on it’s own which benefits MSFS in the sense it doesn’t have feed data to/from the main memory as frequently. Or something.

You might be thinking 96mb isn’t “a lot” but comparatively, most high end CPUs top out at 32mb of L3 Cache. It’s really what makes the 5800X3D one of the best CPUs on the market because it’s more efficient in this area and downstream that benefits all games
