This morning when I started my PC, the pinned icon I had created for MSFS was blank. It was still pinned, but there was no icon. When I clicked on it, an admin popup opened, asking if I wanted to run a program I think was called “custominstaller.exe” from within the install path of MSFS.
At first, I clicked No, and the pinned icon then showed the MSFS icon. Then I clicked it, and the same prompt appeared. I clicked No again, and then the regular MSFS intro screens appeared.
I’m not sure what this was all about or what the consequences of clicking No are.
Has anyone else seen this, or does anyone know what this was all about?
Does the game not start when you try to run it through the MS store?
I’m not even sure what that means. I always run the app from the pinned link.
How do you run it “through the MS store”?
let me get onto my sim PC and I’ll walk you through it.

Ah, sorry.
We used to be able to get into MSFS, by logging into Xbox Insider Hub, selecting Insider content, selecting MSFS and accessing the Store. From there you could run or update the app, but now MSFS appears to have disappeared from the insider content page, for me at least.
Thanks, but I don’t have Game Pass. I have the digital rights version.
I did find MSFS in my library from the store, but I normally don’t run it from there. I’m sure I could, if I wanted to. But I’m curious about this change that produced the admin popup. That has not happened until today, so it was a bit of a surprise.
ah, that’s where it went. It’s now in the XBOX Console Companion App.
It may be that something has damaged your installation, and trying to run it from the Xbox app will just prove that or otherwise.
Actually, I don’t think there is any damage. The program started just fine after I clicked No, and I’m in now flying a plan I started flying last night and saved in the middle.
Once I finish this flight, I’ll close it down and run it from the Store library and see if the install prompt appears again.

I ran MSFS from the library in Microsoft Store, and the same admin prompt appeared.
I got a screenshot of the prompt this time.
After clicking on Show more details I get.
The actual name of the executable is custominstallerexec.exe in the system32 directory.
Again, the program runs fine after clicking No, but what am I missing by doing that?
You might want to confirm with MS support, but I’d be surprised if anyone, apart from MS, would be able to get the “Microsoft Windows” Verified publisher, so you should be OK to hit ‘Yes’.
I’m guessing, and I emphasize “guessing”, that this is just MS wanting permission to apply updates to your copy of MSFS, as and when necessary, and selecting ‘Yes’ will also prevent this message from being displayed in the future.
Maybe someone else on the forum can confirm that this is nothing to worry about??
I finally clicked Yes. I’m not sure if anything changed, but it doesn’t seem that any harm was done. At least the admin prompt is gone.

Nothing to worry about just asking permission to run the installer.
