That actually I think can be seen on Netflix. I think it’s called “Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?” ![]()
Well, I’ll go ahead and say it: the Miltech Amphibious Ready Group package is a great accessory to the Harrier (and only about $11.67USD at today’s exchange rate on Orbx).
After a quick fly-over of MCAS Kaneohe Bay, I returned the the ship and managed a vertical landing in a fairly stiff 12 knot crosswind. Don’t worry, that’ll buff right out … ![]()
I later took off from Ford Island, flew out to the U.S.S. Mercy (also part of the ARG package):
I then circled past some of the moving ships from the Seafront Simulations Isldand Vessels pack. This is another great bit of immersion for low-level VFR flying. The Island Vessels version here has both civilian stuff like sailboats, yachts and cruise ships, but also static and moving military vessels.
I then made a painstaking, halting and awkward landing on the one of the moving amphibious assault ships from the Island Vessels pack. Unfortunately, I forgot to set my parking brakes and thanks to MSFS’s weird ground physics, the ship rolled right out from under me.
Oops. ![]()
These vessel packs add so much fun and immersion to any kind of VTOL flying. Highly recommended for Harrier sim-jocks!
Done everything right in terms of marketing.
Perfect timing.
Everyone who sees the documentary now wants the plane.
The concept that worked so well with TopGun-Maverick and the F-18 won’t go wrong here.

Well, they dropped a bombshell today.
Announcements of many new A/C including the C-5, C-17 and A-10.
EDIT: Made a post HERE.
Yep. Personally I’m excited for the F-4 Phantom in the several variants and liveries they’ll be doing. Someone should probably start new threads for each of the 2023 planes:
A proper A-10, awesome!
Correct me If iam wrong…but the Harrier performs perfectly after the Update. Awesome!
What is that fancy thing?
That’s always wriggling around in front of your nose and you just don’t know what it’s good for?
And please don’t tell me to read the manual.

its a weather vein, help to tell direction of crosswinds whilst hovering or performing VTOL OPS
Weathervane - I shudder to imagine what kind of blood would flow through a weather vein. ![]()
More seriously, if you fly a lot of helicopters in sims, you’ll see something like a string across the windscreen that functions similarly as an indicator of wind direction so the pilot can adjust accordingly.
The blood of a thousand Category 5 storms!
Ahhhh…thanks
that makes sense.
Before the update it didn’t work properly. That’s probably why I didn’t understand it.
It is quite similar to the “yaw string” on some aircraft.
The Harrier has an aerodynamic quirk often referred to as the, “Death Triangle”.
It’s a combination of AOA, airspeed, and sideslip that, particularly at airspeeds between 30 and 90 knots, will have the tendency to flip the aircraft on its back.
This is generally termed, derisively, the “Dead Bug”.
Thus, as you accelerate or decelerate through the 30-90 knot region, it is critically important to zero out your sideslip.
Which is why the easiest way to vertically take off or land a Harrier is into the wind. You can see it in videos. The Harrier will ascend into a hover, turn into the wind, then accelerate out. Alternatively, you will see it come into the hover and slowly yaw its nose into the wind while maintaining its approach path.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t operate out of the wind as long as, as you slow or speed up, you center the vane. Since the vane is aligned to the “relative” wind, the vector sum of your airspeed and that of the wind, it will vary as you speed up or slow down.
Obviously, the faster you move, the less effect the wind has on your sideslip. This figures into the decision making as to what take off or landing type is most suitable for your circumstances.
Thank you very much for the great explanation.
You can really learn something here.
Very nice.
