DC Designs F-14A/B Tomcat Announcement & Discussion

All - Used CK from KDZJ C&D, flew up to 50,000, slow gentle turn back to 15,000, and used the PMS50 program in sim to setup ILS Rwy 11 at KMGE. Don’t know little nav program enough yet, but got that much input and transferred to plane. Had to input my ILS frequency. I had heading/autothrottle/altitude systems controlling plane until picked up the localizer/ILS glide slope, then let AP fly into within two miles. Turned of AP, and manually flew her in to land. At landing kept speed about 135 or so, over threshold, throttle to idle, spiolers engaged, and touched down soft as feather. Taxied to parking, and was rewarded wtih nice entry in logbook. Flying up to 50K was exciting, did it by hand.
Some possible bugs, the trim wheel inputs, either up/down are very slow to take hold, and then once they do, very fast if you need to change, this may be sim bug, or a configuration setting in Bravo TQ unit. However, configured plane at about 800-1000 feet decent and nice gentle turn to left just spirliing down. WARNING-DO not let airspeed fall below 200 because enterted in to flat spin, stall, and had to point plane streight down to again gain Airspeed, and recover control, so my feeling is anything below 150 in slow decending slow turn should be it. That I could gain control bouyed me up, being up high gives you lots of room to make mistakes and get out of them. AP/ILS/HDG systems work, but there are a bunch of switches to engage and you need to know all that they do for it to work. Plane did pick up navigation stuff, and align with RW and take her down. Great Plane, real fun to fly. Bet going through Rocky’s/Alps, flat out screeming through the passes would be fun.

I had a lot of fun

If any enemy was close at my 6, I strongly feel I would have lost them around the 4:20 mark I don’t care how modern their plane is

I hope you got this sorted. I think you did but just checking. It’s not anything to do with the plane itself and not a common issue. Also just to clarify it’s not a Just Flight aircraft, it’s a DC Designs aircraft, a great one at that. We’re simply helping with the sales, publishing etc. Thanks.

Thanks for the positive energy. I’m unsure if it’s fixed but last night my last few flights worked good and I was really enjoying feeling like Maverick.

Even with all my freezes I can still say it’s a well made plane and super fun to fly.

I have purchased the F-14 Tomcat and so far it has been a blast to fly. I do find it hard at night flying, especially on external view but I am sure this will get easier. It seems worse over areas not lit up.
Now if I could get my landings better, I always seem to come in way too hot. Any tips besides just practice ha ha.
How do I engage the air brake ? (on Xbox series X) do I need to assign it?
Are there any plans to bringing paint shop to the Xbox version? Kinda like Forza. That would be awesome!

Engage Approach mode and the Direct Lift Control system on final - full flaps, minimal power (not quite idle because you may need to spool up quickly if you slow too fast), gear down. Keep your speed up to about 140-150 knots until a mile or two, then let speed bleed off to around 135-140 knots. Don’t try to flare too much at all. The undercarriage is meant for arrested carrier landings, so a three-point landing or close to it is standard.

Don’t know the XBox control for the speed brake - on my PC with a Logitech X52 HOTAS, it was bound by default to my Spoiler toggle, which works great.

Thanks for the tips, I will try it!
Jumping from a Cessna to this jet sure is different, ha ha.
I wish they would model a Tutor Jet like the CT-114 that would make an easier transition.

You will likely need to assign it - I had to with the F-15. I set it to RB + LB + Up/Down on the D-Pad.

Hi all! Just got this plane and loving it! Quick question, is there a way to enter a gps flight plan with waypoints from within the cockpit, or is my only IFR navigation options VOR to VOR?

not at the moment. if implemented, it would be a CDNU, which would go inside the RIO Cockpit on the left console. Some users use the gtn750 free add-on as an alternative on a virtual panel.

what is integrated is a non-visible CDU to manage speeds in all flight phases through VNAV, but you need to have a pre-loaded flight.

Thanks. But if I enter a flight plan from the world map it should work right?

Yeah, it works and is displayed in the MFD (NAV mode), default navigation mode is GPS/RNAV. If you want to follow vors or ILS landings you need to switch to VOR mode. There’s a switch called NAVGPS in the left console that allows you to switch between GPS or VOR

Yes, it should work, you will be happier with the GTM750 free addon, it can be used in any plane. The makers produce a manual, and I use it all the time in this plane. TIP-Asobo/MS - Set up world map so we can start a flight, and not have to have a destination for it. Even coming back to orgin might not be what we want to do, but at POO (Point of Origin) might not know where heading, just bumming around so to speak, then the spark hits us, but no way to change FP already in, ahhhhhh, GTM-750 lets you delete present plan and put in new one, it’s a way cool program. Thank you Rob for the great Tip.

I managed to start from C&D the very first time I loaded into the plane - it’s really not that complicated if you can find the switches. Can you tell us what switches you can’t find and what step(s) are tripping you up? I’m sure people can help get you going quickly.

@LameLefty Thanks for providing the assistance, much appreciated

Fully interactive checklists are coming, they’re actually quite a handful to code but they will be added to all my aircraft in future updates.

@CodenameJack447 and @DEAN01973 I have been busy working a lot of overtime this week which has limited my time on MSFS. I have been able to fly 8 or 9 short IFR flights however between NAS Oceana and Wallops Island and between San Diego and your lovely NAS Miramar to see if I could replicate the crash with the TransponderState=4 line added to my aircraft. I only had the program freeze and crash one other time when I turned off the power so it seems to be something that only happens occasionally. I am glad that you will be adding a mode selection knob to the transponder. Having a fully functioning transponder with the mode select should fix the issue with it not transmitting to ATC and them canceling the flight plan. Also as LowVis4165 pointed out it is needed if you are using the online virtual controllers with services like VATSIM. Since you are adding a functioning mode select knob for the transponder it may be a good idea to not use the TransponderState=4 code. Because it seems to set the code and transponder state like the AI copilot does when you tell him to control the radios, it could conflict with the mode select knob that you are adding to the F-14’s. One thing I also discovered while doing the flights in the F-14s is that some of the naval air stations have the carrier markings on the runways for carrier qualification flights. While there is no meatball for the glidescope or arrestor cables for the hook to catch, you can still practice your carrier landings at these airfields. I saw them at Wallops Island and NAS Oceana. Since they are there, I suspect that they are at other naval air bases as well like Pensacola. I thought I would mention this in case anyone would like to practice their carrier landings. Thank you again for adding the transponder mode select knob and have a good night.

WRT the Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) boxes - I just looked at NAS Miramar, NAS Lemoore, NAS Whidbey Island, and also Oceana, but didn’t see any. I was in an H-135. I wonder if this makes a difference. I was hoping to do some FCLP’s at my old stomping grounds (Whidbey)! :grinning:

NAS Oceana has them on runway 05L at least. I am not sure about the other runways. Miramar may not have them because it is now a Marine Corps base and no longer a Naval Air Station, I don’t know. I do wonder how many airfield have the carrier markings though for practicing the carrier landings.

Thanks for taking the time to make those tests. XPONDR selector is now in Stearman and coming to all the jets.

Regarding carrier markings on runways at NAS Miramar, they’re still there as the Marine Corps also operate from aircraft carriers - it’s something I will add later at some point.

Your (free and wonderful!) NAS Miramar scenery is a must for anyone flying the F-14. Fantastic to see the ramps full of F-14’s and E-2’s and the “FIGHTERTOWN USA” sign. It’s one of my favorite places to do practice circuits.
