Hi all,
Looking for some help on the DC6. For some reason, even if I load in on a runway when I throttle up the engines all spin up but I just don’t get the power to take off. No issues with any other plane I fly.
Can someone point me in the right directions. Oh and yes I use the flight engineer.
thanks
Josh
And you have gust lock off?

Unlock the red bar next to your right hip.
We all make the old mistake with this gust lock… It prevents two of the engines to spool up.
I’m confused.
If you’re spawning on the runway, shouldn’t the gust lock be already off, the engines turning and the aircraft in a ready-for-takeoff state?
How heavy are you?
If you’re over 87,000 lbs. gross weight you need to instruct the AFE to utilize a “wet” takeoff. This will use the water/alcohol system to increase takeoff power. If you’re under 87,000 lbs. use a “dry” takeoff.
Seems like it should of been removed if your at the end of the runway, but No… its not.
Look down at your throttles, you will see two of them go full throttle in animation. I was tinkering with that at first as well, and moving some slider, it would allow the other two, but never all 4. Then discovered the gust lock bar…
Fun plane once that is resolved, they should of just skipped that feature, or automated… lots of unhappy fliers arose from this I am sure.
If you use the AI Engineer, you don’t throttle up. He does it.
You are supposed to leave your physical throttles at idle.
He will move the sim throttles.
If you go through all the checklists, the gust locks are removed by him.

It’s the captain’s action to do that. They don’t set up your instruments for anything either. AFE and FO actions have been done, captain’s stuff needs to be done by yourself.
It’s a complex and highly detailed addon, it’s highly recommended and adviced to read the introduction manual.

I don´t understand why (and under which circumstances) this flight engineer is needed. The only secret is not overboosting the engines and taking off with only 90% throttle to prevent damage. Oh and reduce manifold pressure 10-15 units before switching to turbochargers stage II in about 15.000 feet height.
As mentioned, gust lock is the likely culprit here. However, there are “a lot of moving parts” on this aircraft.
If you haven’t already, watch the first several tutorial videos produced by Captain Randazzo; they are excellent. As you get deeper into the DC-6 you can watch the rest as you gain more experience and curiousity.
The DC-6 is - by far - the best model in MSFS if you like managing complex systems, IMHO of course. Even the electrical system is modelled, and will pop a circuit breaker from time-to-time. Fuel management is almost an art form (there are eight tanks!) and is quite versatile.
There’s a lot to learn, and to master.

Really these sometimes pop when being in need of too many amperes? What an awesome plane! A true master of the clouds.

All - My first USN assignment was to a squadron in Hawaii, which flew C-118’s which was the military version of the DC-6. It had a Pilot; Co-Pilot; Navigator; Flight Engineer (usually ADR 1st class or CPO); and 2-3 loadmasters. When I rode along, the Pilot always managed the throttles, the FE monitored the gauges and they talked continuously. If the VIP version for CINCPAC, there were 1-2 stewards. It took 8-10 hours to reach the North Island NAS if the winds were nice. It was used to deliver cargo for USN all over the Pacific during Vietnam, because it could land in some areas, where nothing bigger could. We also had C-130’s (in those days also FE-enlisted) and then they were old, today, still made by Lockheed, oldest plane in Military service possibly exception B-52.

I believe they’re pretty much tied, if you go by the year they both entered active service: 1954. I do know that the Herc holds the record for longest continuous production run of a military aircraft.
Thank you all. Very much appreciated. Tonight I had my first successful takeoff and even a landing (Bit bumpy) but got it down
it was that lock. Thanks again
Josh
