That was a reference to 2020, but only if you install all WUs and buy and download every single addon in the marketplace…!
Hey, some of us got pretty close. ![]()
What do they mean with VRAM issue = hardware limitation!?!?
They don‘t care to fix their stuff? Thats it? Put the sim into the trash?
Thanks for that info. I keep trying to start it, unsuccessfully so far, but this gives me hope.
The install for me on the 19th was less then half an hour I think. Very fast. It went equally fast downhill after that though as it failed to load, but I didn’t have any sign in issues. That came later.
The LODs are pretty awful, though. I don’t know which settings if any might improve it, but when I pop outside my aircraft in the drone and move away a decent distance, and then snap back by resetting the view, parts of my aircraft model have dropped to a visibly lower LOD and are boxy and low-res. It quickly fixes itself, but IMHO that shouldn’t happen at all. The detailed model and texture for the aircraft you’re flying should be constantly available as it is in 2020. Other models are a different matter - we’re all familiar with multiplayer / AI models having no visible gear until you get right next to them - but I’d want that to improve, not get worse.
My download was very fast too, admittedly I didn’t purchase until 27th.
Far better than the snail slow downloads we kept getting with FS20.
Rather than a bug I think it´s just a wrong design decission and for that reason it could be corrected. The problem behind this is that drone cam is an independent asset, so it´s not part of the aircraft iftself, as the cockpit. Therefore when you select drone the cockpit data is unloaded as it´s not visible anymore, as only aircraft external 3D model is initially loaded when drone is active (which can still contain a LOD with a simplified cockpit layout as in the regular external view).
The wrong design implementation here in my opinion is that you need to stream the cockpit again, if that´s really the case behind this behaviour. It could be simply stored as part of temporary local cache on your drive or even on memory which is valid for the ongoing flight sesion only, as well as the whole aircraft asset indeed, and deleted once flight sesion is over. Those things are not dynamic as scenery, because scenery is usually not needed anymore (or at least for a while if it contains generic objects) once you passed by the scenery area. The aircraft 3D model/textures, the avatar and all those main things like sounds or gauges scripts won´t change after loading them for the first time and therefore they should not need re-streaming.
Indeed this temporary cache approach would prevent many of the issues being detected and would also help to release workload on the streaming servers, without the need to install the whole 1 TB content locally. You just download the needed content upon starting flight once and only stream the scenery and anything else that is really updated dynamically (weather, traffic, etc). So basically you do what MSFS already does now but instead of getting the main assets from hard disk upon start, you download them on demand upon start.
I´m not sure if rolling cache is expected to work as such an overall streaming cache now, unless they changed the implementation. In MSFS case at least it was just intended to store scenery locally, but not anything else.
Cheers
People waited years with anticipation for 2020 to release. It was a huge upgrade over anything else available at the time, and still is! We had no other sim to go to that had that much to offer. MSFS2024 is lacking all of this!
If you compare 2020 to 2024 you have very little progress and some regression. “Overall” the visuals are not as good as 2020, and the performance is nowhere near as good as 2020. The menu interface and peripheral setup are clunky at best, and can get really annoying. 2024 seems to have more bugs than 2020 at release probably related to streaming everything. In its current state, 2020 is far superior to 2024 in most ways. Yes, 2024 has better textures across the board when the stream works well. When it doesn’t work well, it looks worse than 2020. In 2024 you can walk around the environment, but it’s a flight sim not GTA. If Asobo doesn’t get 2024 working well soon, I too believe it will be the end of MSFS franchise. People wont stick with it because they can just go back to FS2020 or another sim that releases with a better experience.
After 4 years, 2020 in my opinion, is at the point it should have been when it was released. It’s very playable and i can fly for hours in VR with great performance and minimal crashes. 2020 was literally a 3+ year beta but it’s pretty cool now. I wish 2024 would have just been a visual/physics upgrade to 2020 because why reinvent the wheel? After 4 years of refinement why would you throw everything out and start over? Probably would have been a much better experience with just the upgrade.
I haven’t had this experience here. 4K Ultra rendering, TLOD various at 200 and 400, things in PG areas look the same for me as 2020 except the trees are a different shade of green. My planes render fine so far.
Similar settings here.
But I have seen what was described, having to reload cockpit textures. Not every time, but once in a while.
That said, the LOD is pretty good, just folks should make sure they understand Dynamic Settings before turning it on, as it will adjust your LOD automatically to maintain a target framerate.
Actually if you go to 14:35 in the stream, he says the 2024 Team said that if you download the entirety of “2024” it would be 1.5TB. He’s not talking about downloading 2020. That of course doesn’t include size of the streaming world but the core sim for 2024.
Hope you’re able to get in! I should have said the “exit to desktop” shows at the bottom left, not the bottom right.
I believe this setting is why we see some screen shots with extremely low LOD ground textures. I couldn’t watch the LOD bounce around like that. It would ruin the immersion especially in VR. I run a really high end system in VR and i get an average of 44 FPS in 2020 on Ultra/400 LOD using Open XR. No where near that FPS in 2024. I can’t even fly for more than 10 minutes in VR before 2024 crashes.
Supposedly LOD improvements are coming with patch 3 next week.
I’ve noticed this as well, the LOD is too aggressive, you don’t have to move very far from a plane to see it get boxy and low res.
This is happening to some content creators who do group flights as well.
LOD to my knowledge is a different thing than textures. But low LOD can reduce detail at a distance from your plane.
Yes that’s what I was referring to. At times it looks good and then it drops off and looks like DCS.
I just wanted to be clear there, because low res textures are also an issue, but they seem related to streaming data and the possibility that MS/Asobo are using lower resolution textures for ultra settings than they used in 2020.
For folks who want to see what LOD does, turn it down to 10, and you will see the smallest cone of detail around your plane before things get low LOD.
Lol that looks worse than old MSFS X! Yes this new streaming everything is amazing! I wish the developers would show these amazing images while they talk up the streaming benefits. Or just run the sim and experience it for themselves. I bet patch 3 fixes all of this and the sim runs perfectly. I’m really looking forward to it. ![]()
sure hope so! yeah that looks so bad
