Default Cessna 152 + Pimax Crystal with Smart Smoothing, ground stutter? Dx12 one solution?

I’ve discovered a small issue, if i switch to the default cessna 152 and test in a relatively addon free area, i get stutter when looking at the ground in a turn. If i switch to say the 310R payware, its stutter free, so is the cap10 as well (default cap). This is in openxr native mode (not steamvr, as steam vr i lose some performance)

Has anyone ran into this?
I need to verify but i’m pretty sure the jpl 152 mod is probably the same situation. (edit: same thing with the jpl 152, also tested the a2a comanche, no issue with comanche) If i go bare bones vanilla install, the 152 becomes slightly better, though its still visible, just not as a extreme, even lowering vr to medium quality you can still see it.

I spent hours thinking i had a general stutter issue and it turned out its “isolated”.

(14900k + 4090 + pimax crystal in smart smoothing mode client 1.14).

Hi,

I mainly fly the JPL 152 with a Quest 2 (basic OpenXR with USB Link) and I experience this also.

In general, the experience is very good with the setup and settings I described here, but I still have occasional stutters, most of which occurring during turns while taxiing at departure.

However, it seems to be the same with other comparable planes (DR400, WBSIM C172, …). I’ve never tested with other paywares, but I would have expected the opposite result with more complex planes…

Thats interesting that you see the same behavior on a different headset too, i think i did notice it on the dr400, i need to double check the c172.

Its the type of thing even if its reduced, once you see it, you cant unsee it lol, and anything moderate enough can have physical affects over time i think.

I agree

But I think that when setting the sim up, we tend to focus too much on these small stutters. In my case I even do aerobatic-like maneuvers chasing for them, just to be sure

But when I’m focused on “performing” realistic navigation correctly, small stutters tend to pass almost unnoticed. Proper piloting rarely involves brutal moves, and small GA planes fly slowly, which contributes to reduce the chances for stutters to happen. And in my case it mostly happens in the beginning of a flight, when taxiing. So it’s a bit annoying in the beginning, but generally go better after a few seconds or minutes.

Globally when the settings are finally OK, I think the VR experience with MSFS is really astonishing. Today I had a nearly stutter-free(*) flight with perfect rendering of the great world rendering of MSFS, and it was extremely pleasant. For being a IRL pilot, and remembering the very first versions of MSFS when I was a child, I must say that the current “state of the art” is completely incredible.

(*) After reading about this a few times recently, I tried with a third-party headset (for sound) instead of the built-in speakers of the Oculus, and at first sight it seems that this reduces most of the last stutters I was getting. Probably specific to the Quest, and to be confirmed, but that may be an interesting finding (on top of that, the sound quality is way better).

I will definitely try this on my next sessions and report back. That could indeed be something a lot of us have overlooked!

Stutters with the default 172 as well maybe not as bad. Fps holds 45,46 throughout. . Weird thing is that before I went from the 12900k z690 to z790 14900k I didn’t notice this

Perhaps common to other headsets as we are finding here but still wondering if others w the crystal with the same client n smoothing experience it.

Tested again, not sure whats helped here, i know before setting dlss to performance kept the fps at 45 solid, whereas at quality it would dip below (unsure if this is the fault of the newer dll i downloaded)., however, i tried again with the 152, i turned nvidia reflex + boost to off and also set a rolling cache of 70gb, not sure why turning reflex off would help, nor if it was the cache, but now things are alot smoother, or i got lucky for that instance.

EDIT: so if i switch the dll for dlss back to 2.4x instead of 3.7.20 (i think this is the version), things get worse, even on performance mode. i also currently have hardware gpu accel off, its been off throughout my tests, i’m going to turn that back on and retest to see if it remains stable. 95% stutter free with 3.7.20 vs 60-70% stutter free with 2.4x dlss dll

EDIT2: turning hags back on allowed dlss quality mode to maintain close to the 45 fps mark (still the 3.7.x dlss dll). however, it has lead (i think) to more stuttering overall, maybe not a ton more but its obvious its slightly worse (even going back to performance dlss), drawback to performance seems to only be trees shimmering close up and in the distance a few shimmers, still prefer quality mode.

UPDATE: tried dx12 + hags + dlss dll 3.7.2 + quality mode in the c152 and its smooth, much better with quality mode going on, so switching to the dreaded dx12 has paid off for this test, i’m going to try to resume using the rest of the sim and see how it goes from here  (previous for the longest time was dx11 only)

Almost full time C152 user here on a Quest 2. I’ve recently reviewed all my settings and find it horrifying how many screen shots I needed to include all the tools and settings I use to get a relatively smooth VR flight. Saying that I have never managed to remove stuttering which can be quite heavy when turning the aircraft on the ground. Also I find if I stare at the ground as I fly there are micro stutters even though I have low CPU/GPU usage and around 50fps. Like you I am running DX12 beta and DLSS (3.7.0.0). Good luck.

This is exactly what I’m using (beside other settings mentioned in the aforementioned post), with great result.

(Although for dx12/hags/dll version, I was not able to see a manifest improvement separately, this is the combo I settled for in the end)

Same setup as mentioned before. I’m afraid removing all stutters (especially the taxiing ones) is demanding too much. But really, with the hardware and setup described here I got very good results without too much tools (nothing particular beside OS setup, Oculus and MSFS).

Well… not sure if placebo or not, but it definitely SEEMS a lot smoother and less hitching with the Audio Streaming set to Computer only, using Headphones and setting MSFS Audio Output to them!

Added side-benefit is that I did not realise just how much of the sound detail and quality (bass especially) I was missing, as well as a much better positional 3D effect. And actually my headphones are comfortable enough so I am keeping it this way! Mild pain to have to put headphones on top AFTER the headset but it’s all good.

An extra brilliant benefit is that I have FS Realistic set to use my monitor speakers this way, so the extra wind sounds from that sound like they are coming from OUTSIDE and in front of me, like the wind is hitting on the windshield! It’s rather epic! Full immersion man!!
