Default Windsock is red&white (2020) and orange (2024)

What is the default color of the MSFS windsock library object in August’25 in MSFS2020 and in MSFS2024 ? If you put in the MSFS2020 scenery editor a windsock, it’s a Red&White one and this exact same appears Orange one in MSFS024. It didn’t behave like this few months ago.”

Is the default SDK windsock object now red & white for MSFS2020 and orange for MSFS2024?The same object has different outputs depending of the sim version ?

In MSFS2024 Su3 Beta:

… in MSFS2020

The “standard” would be the red and White. (The orange is used for industrial applications i.e. Chemical works, etc.)

Orange windsocks can be found at airports / heliports too.

Unfortunately, “standard” is not a shared notion. For example in France, it’s Red & White while the Orange is everywhere in US.

My point with this thread in this forum is to check what is the default one in MSFS (august 2025). As far as I know, it used to be the Red & White that covered wrongly US GA airports and now it seems that the Orange windsock is the default one. Want to verify and be sure that it’s a new Microsoft/Asobo’s strategy.

Hi, Vincent,

Precisely, yesterday, I saw on TV a documentary film about incipient electric planes (very interesting, by the way), and I saw that some countries have orange windsocks.

ChatGPT says that there are some general recommendations, but that varies a lot depending on the countries (for instance, Canada uses both orange and white and reds windsocks).

Regards

I reported this error at KNUQ… looks like they left in two from 2020.

Frankly I find this poor workmanship irritating.

Finally filed a bug report:

Hi, I know all this (I’m flying in realworld in US and France… see also FAA reco on my previous post).

My question is SDK related (User Support Hub / SDK): what is the default color (red&white or Orange) of the default windsock in MSFS2020 and in MSFS2024 in August’25.

What “this error”? You mean the double windsock? It’s not the point of this thread  See my previous answer(s): “what is the default color of the MSFS windsock library object in August’25 in MSFS2020 and in MSFS2024 ? You put in the MSFS2020 scenery editor a red&white windsock that appears Orange one in MSFS024. It didn’t behave like this few months ago.” (I have edited my original post)

I know - since few weeks now - double windsock are popping up again in MSFS20204. As an amateur airport developer, I have to update a lot of my airports.

Independently from rules or normatives there´s definitelly a streaming issue with the following assets:

  1. Windsocks: as you report they appear orange. However they randomly appear red/white as well. I have checked active LODs for this asset and problem is not releated to LOD textures, as they load correctly and with full details in both cases. Windsocks also reproduce this error at the scenery editor, both when loading an existing compiled project or when creating a new one and adding a windsock anywhere.

  2. PAPI, approach lights and light rows (for all standard colors and for custom colors lights rows too): they randomly miss the 3D model and only the light effect is displayed. They can also vanish completely and not even display the light effect while LOD0 is active (so at closer distances) but they will display light effect with lower detail LODs (at bigger distances or while on the world map max zoom view). Normally after having spawned several times at the same airport the lights show correctly including 3D models, but the error is reproduced again randomly after some flights or after changing location.

Just today I was taking some screenshots in game and during the same game session at the same airport I could see how windsocks were displaying red/white and then orange by simply returning to menu to change my aircraft. On the other hand I could also see how light rows where displaying correctly and when returning to menu as well they missed the 3D model.

Both assets belong to “fs-base” official package. Terrible, as it´s one of the main packages and it´s used worldwide and also by third party scenery…

You can reproduce the error by launching game after having deleted the streaming content folder and the caches or without that by simply returning to menu and do whatever (change aircraft, change settings or go to marketplace for instance) as the later will refresh currently loaded scenery.

Cheers

Thanks @geloxo for the input. As I was working on my LFPN’s update, I have just notice the PAPI lacking of object ;(

Yes, I noticed the issues when updating my airports too. PAPI and approach lights seem to be solved once they are cached once, so after loading airport for the second time. However the windsocks and light rows continue failing randomly afterwards, even on default airports. Quite bizarre as all those objects are properly loaded while at editor and after compiling airports, but once you close editor and the compiled pack is reloaded they start to fail

Cheers

Does anyone anyone if its possible to change the default orange and white to just orange? I fly USA so I only want an orange windsock.
