Today, when I select menu items such as Editor, rather than the item appearing as a popup movable / sizable window it splits my main window as shown below
It appears you’ve moved the windows into the capture zone for side panels. As you move a window around on the screen, you’ll see these light blue rectangles appear at the top, bottom, sides, and a few appear in the middle of the screen. Releasing your window in one of those rectangles will grab the window and size it to the pertinent place on the screen. To get it back to a movable window you have to grab the window in the window name (e.g. in the top picture, the blue “Project Editor” or in the bottom picture, the blue “Inspector”) and move it away from the side the window had been sucked to.
