Did the night lighting get a downgrade?

I haven’t paid much attention to night lighting recently so maybe it is this way already for some time. I just remember night lighting to look much better than this? Maybe because of the snow?

Especially the green, red, yellow and blue lights look out of place.

While the night lighting is a mixed bag, it has undeniably improved since release.

But compared to flying by daylight or flying through clouds, night flying over cities leaves me feeling a little underwhelmed still.

I don’t fly that often at night but I did a few days ago, over London with light rain.
I was pleasantly surprised, thought it looked pretty good.
Certainly not like your picture. As you say, maybe it’s some interaction with the Snow?

Some of it got better, but quite a few things got worse…
Lightsources aren’t sharp spots in many conditions, and the reflected light from the ground often seems brighter than the lamps. This would be true for good shielded lamps but those are still in minority in the multi-million cities I fly over here in the US, as well as northern Europe earlier in my career.

And yes, the snow makes those “lights-plashes” even worse, much too bright & extended.

Another thing I really don’t like is that so many lamps illuminate the roofs of buildings, given the impression of a flat 2d texture with light blobs on top of it, without the real life “cut-off” by near-black roof-tops.

My thinking: the lamp density has been reduced quite a bit since Early Alpha as well as release build, so this is probably compensated by extending the illumination of the fewer lamps.
And since lamps are rendered at much greater distances now: placing the lamps higher at fixed altitude AMSL get around LOD-jumping up&down of AGL placed lamps as terrain resolution increasing when you get closer. Unfortunately this also illuminates rooftops as much as roads. Which just doesn’t look right compared to the real world.

I assume its mainly caused by the snow, although these green, yellow, red and blue lights also look completely out of place, like a Christmas tree :christmas_tree:.

Traffic light, maybe?

Could be but it still looks odd. Traffic lights aren’t shining directly into the air as far as I’m aware :joy:.

yes night lighting got a downgrade, yet people don’t talk about it somehow.
draw distance got improved but the lights at a little bit higher altitude looks horrible.

Whatsup with the white blobs everywhere, and the weird stretched blurry light bulbs?

It reallly irritates me that things that used to look so good in Alpha got a massive downgrade, they fixed and worked a few things but till this day not like the alpha. Just do a little research and you’ll see the difference.
