Hi,
Is it possible to add additional types of glider tow planes in MSFS?
Would like to add the Robin and the Cessna L-19 or a Piper Super Cub.
Thanks for any advice!

officially no. however I did read somewhere that it is possible to to change the tow plane in one of the CFG files. Can’t remember which one now but you may be able to work it out.
Hi,
Thanks for the heads up. I believe that I have read that as well.
I will take a look at the default glider cfg files and see if I can change it there.
Hi,
So I had a look at the LS-8 glider for any reference to a towplane, but this did not yield anything.
However I took a closer look at the default C-172 G1000 and discovered that it has a dedicated towplane version.
I do not have the skills to create a towplane version for other default or addon airplanes. Maybe someone dedicated with the right knowledge is able to do that. Hopefully we can get different towplanes either from Asobo or through an external developer.
Such an odd choice of the default aircraft seeing as there are tail draggers that would have better represented reality. Hopefully next update please Asobo! ![]()
So far, the only difference I can find is a “isTowPlane = 1” line in the aircraft.cfg, plus the model has a towhook.
I don’t know if the towhook component is necessary for the function of the plane to act as a tow plane.
You could add “isTowPlane = 1” to the xcub or the L-19 and see what happens…
Well the Got Frends Wilga will be able to be selected from the Glider launch menu. If purchased.
I tried! works, the glider is towed but the rate of climb is high and the glider cannot sustain that rate.
for the moment I tried with DR400 mod Regent 180 available on flightsim.to
I continue to experiment and investigate
Update: Habaemus Papam
I managed to have a satisfactory tow with a different aircraft than the default one.
in addition to inserting the string “isTowPlane = 1” I directly entered the ai.cfg file and the runway.FLT, climb.FLT and cruise.FLT files present in the default Cessna 172 TowPlane folder
I just saw that the towplane entry already exists in the default DR400’s aircraft.cfg file but set to 0
I also tried with L19, it takes off well and with grit (even from short runways that cause problems with C172) but the climb rate is too high… you too had this problem
Hi,
No, I did not with the default metal livery of the L-19. The tow went just fine.
However I have another addon livery for the L-19, and with that the airplane just swings a bit to the right and stops.
Found that the DR400-180 climbs too steep and then stalls the LS 8-18.
The Asobo Savage Cub works great.
Still trying out more airplanes as tugs.
“But the rate of climb is high” he says… as he uses a jet to tow a glider ![]()
Thanks for the giggle ![]()
As Jazz noted, the secret is going to be in the editing of the .flt files and maybe the flight.cfg file of the model you use for towing for those models that don’t work out of the box. That’s why the C172 towplane is a separate model most likely (I haven’t dug into the differences myself yet). Maybe make a separate model and reduce the power or cruise power of the DR400
Maybe we could convince the kind @NightMercury358 to release an update to the Birddog with a Towplane model ![]()
the DR400 I managed to get right, it climbs right when it takes off but I used a Robin DR400 Regent D-EAGZ mod from flightsim.to.
if you want I’ll give you the files that I retouched and then overwrite them with those of the mod
…
don’t tell anyone… i was tempted to try the darkstar ![]()
Next thing you know we’ll have A310’s towing 5 gliders into the sky ![]()
All getting the jet wake buffet! “Egad, this is a rough ride!
”
Used also the D-EAGZ version 1.4.2, but it climbed too steep. The default DR400 would not work. I will now try the DR400-140 and see.
He’s looking into it ![]()
