I find I have difficulty navigating menus in G1000 nxi and similar FMS because the system is so finicky about having the mouse hovering in just the right location. Often when I try to turn a knob with mouse wheel (when the turning symbol is visible), the mouse pointer must slip off that exact location and I end up just scrolling in or out (depending on which way I turn wheel) of the screen. It seems so unbelievably finicky about the location after some of the recent updates. Is there a mouse setting or something that will widen the target location on screen for such hovering?
I know the “lock” system should help lock on to a knob for these purposes but then it gets confusing with whether I need to then right click to get back to pointer or left click to scroll etc. So I find lock system just as frustrating.
In the videos I’ve seen of people navigating these menus in the G1000 nxi they generally use the legacy pointing system and seem to have no problems like I’ve mentioned. So I don’t get it.
I think using the lock setting there is rather a special mouse button procedure to use the knobs like holding one button down and then doing something else. This setting drove me crazy as terribly cumbersome and time consuming and I found that the so called „legacy“ way was the most sensible way of interacting with the cockpit. Never change a running system.
That was so frustrating to me, I got rid of the srolling in and out function on the mouse, and assigned it to a function on my yoke.
You can delete the mouse function and just use the keyboard keys for scrolling as well.
Jup, it‘s optimized for the use with a game controller where you hold a button like RB and then use another button to adjust the knob. I find it pointless with the mouse.
Yes but my problems exist in “legacy” mode too. I.E. the finickiness of the location to get the knob to actually turn when I scroll the wheel. That’s why I wonder if there are mouse settings to change.
You don’t need the scroll to turn the knob.
Position the cursor on the left side of a knob and holding left click turns the knob to the left.
Holding the cursor on the right side of the knob and again holding the left click down, turns it to the right
To whoever said that Lock mode is pointless with a mouse, I disagree. I much prefer using Lock mode, especially with small buttons/knobs or in high turbulence conditions. Try it for a few months, it will become second-nature.
Just holding to the left of the knob did help. But I think I found the bigger source of my problem. In my mouse settings, under pointer options, I had “Enhance pointer precision” box ticked. Turning that off, and reducing mouse movement speed, seems to have helped a lot.
Thanks for all the input.
