Discussion + Poll: Sim Update 10 (1.27.21.0)

Same. Build .16 was heaven for us but, at the same time, disgusting for PC players.

Must be a lot of players online around London. As I descend and pass over the city on my way to EGLF, my fps dropped from 60 to 24. Picking up again as I leave London behind me.

In fact there are many papers published on gust strength and distribution with height. Turns out the wind energy specialists need to understand and model these effects. You are quite right about the short changing frequency - my point was really just to do with the data that’s being used as an input and how it’s adjusted for the model. Measurement of wind velocity and gusts is complicated - and I believe it’s done differently in the US to the rest of the world, it’s a difficult problem that would fuel a phd or two - so it’ comes as no surprise to me that simulating this in MSFS would be difficult to achieve realistically. My suggestion would have been to start out with a scaled down model to start with as you can see how. measurement data - largely taken at 10m above the surface - could lead to quite a misleading picture.
I know how difficult wind and gusts are to model as a physicist who used to race sailing dinghies when I was younger and fitter. Understanding wind and gust behaviour wins races……

The content.xml changed, so that the old style content.xml is not functional anymore. See release notes for details. Using the experimental content priority menu will regenerate a new kind of content.xml.

Thanks! So what is to be done?

Yes, same thing happened here. No beta was installed

You are right but we also need a common sense compromise in game, before this turns to be a monster that is not really usable. The metar data is provided at the location of the station, to start with and that data is almost constant until next weather update. This results is some random variations of wind speed and direction which are fine in my opinion. Gust data is quite similar because they get direction and speed only. The frequency adds some randomness as well to them, which is also fine I would say. So the implementation basis is correct but we just need a logical behaviour behind it, more natural so to speak. Then they can add multiple layers to change data with altitude if they want, sure, but keeping the whole thing seemless. We are not looking for a wind simulation 99% close to real one, as real one is supercomplex indeed, as any other atmospheric conditions simulation is, because the amount of minor factors that can produce significant changes is so huge that we would need a super computer to reproduce it, like the ones used in weather prediction. We just need something that is realistic but still usable for the purpose of flying, because this is not a scientific or atmospheric simulator.

Cheers

All my ground textures seem to have just gone.

Can you elaborate? What do you mean? Are you flying over a checkerboard grid?

This is something you’re just seeing that you didn’t see yesterday?

Do you have a second controller? I think if you switch that on as well as the primary controller it defaults to the default configuration on the ā€œguestā€ controller. That might help??

Ok problem solved, updated nvidia drivers, working great , dlss too !

Thx Asobo

Hi Maulsull.
I think this might be a known issue with the XCloud version of MSFS. But thank you, I’ve got another and will give it a shot.

Thanks!

Are you playing in vanilla state or using any 3rd party addons?

Stability seems fine for me so far. I did a 5 hour session with five flights:

  1. 2 1/2 hours in the Cessna 310R across Spain
  2. Some off airport landings and takeoffs around the Reno area in the Kitfox
  3. A short flight in the Pilatus Porter PC-6 along Lost Creek Lake, Oregon
  4. A short flight in the WB Sim Enhanced Cessna 172 near Mt. Shasta California
  5. Over 1 hour in the PMDG 737-600 from Fallon, Nevada (KNFL) to Montrose, Colorado (KMTJ)

All in one session, no restarting the sim, just going back to the main menu and picking another flight. Zero CTDs, no performance degradation over time.

My system:

I7 8700k, RTX 3060 Ti 8GB
48 GB Ram
Windows 10
DirectX 11
Driver version: 512.95
Resolution:1920x1080
A mix of High and Ultra Settings (among them: Terrain Precaching Ultra, Terrain LOD 100, Anti-Aliasing TAA).
FPS limited to 60fps with VSync On.

Using third party. The ones I parted cash for.

I’d guess they are waiting for the regular game ready driver. Most users do not manually go and download the studio version, but rather rely on the automatic update via GeForce Experience app, which doesn’t get the Studio but only Game Ready version. So most users are on the older version still>

And looking at the content of 517.40, there is one mention about MSFS, so let’s hope it’s the fix that Microsoft is waiting before enabling the ā€œfullā€ DX12:

I downloaded and installed the GeForce Game Ready Drivers - Nvidia.

After installation, I restarted the computer and simulator. A positive thing happened. DX 12 works great. The simulator does not stutter. It runs very nicely.

I recommend the installation to everyone who hasn’t done it yet!

Thanks for the information and help!

With so many variables, I gave up on fighting CTDs and started fresh with a clean install and after running hardware checks on my system. No CTDs in safe mode and had a couple of successful default flights. Added the Kodiak with one livery and had a nice stable flight from Catalina Island to John Wayne. All in VR.

I may just leave it here for a few days and keeping flying before layering in more trouble. Fingers crossed.

But that wind, though…it’s ridiculous!

i’ve had great results with the new update and new studio drivers.
random split second stutters are gone, dx12 works, and improved fps and overall game smoothness and fps stability.

main issue i have with the update is the clarity and fuzziness of cockpit gauges.

Same system as I have. :+1:
DLSS does make things a bit blurry, but I use it for the performance increase.
I’m also using the Studio Driver. DX12 works really great for me now.

I wish MS/Asobo would share at least a few words about the driver issue. Many of us are eagerly waiting for any sort of information.

Performancewise I need to use DX12 because I use popouts for my custom G1000. At KLAX with the scenery from feelthere my best fps are in the low 30s. While taxiing on the groundor looking around in the air it goes down in the low 20s and is therefore unplayable. Using the studio driver made no difference.
