Discussion: World Update I: Japan

That depends on the individuals interpretation of that.

Did you label it such in a positive, or negative light? For example, Wikipedia describes it thusly:

" Dog and pony show " is a colloquial term which has come to mean a highly promoted, often over-staged performance, presentation, or event designed to sway or convince opinion for political, or less often, commercial ends.

I enjoyed the presentation, they were very forthcoming, and admitted to some failures at their end. You can’t say fairer than that.

@ hobanagerik

Really I know you as good user here, very constructive,

but if you show us Wiki as some study book, what can I imagine for that now?

If I misinterpreted your meaning, I apologize.

It would be wise not to deviate from the original subject…

Thanks for the Wiki description.

if you do a Google search for

“dog and pony show” criticism

You will NOT get any Hits that cover both “Dog and Pony Show” and “Criticism”

Dog and Pony show is NOT a Criticism or Derogatory saying

I have absolutely no idea what you mean by any of this.

Great, so you liked the presentation. Understood.

eeeehm ok,

let it be, you’re not that one of them probably

I for one would be interested in how much of the US is going to be updated in the next world update. Going down to 5m resolution for a landmass that big is a huge amount of data, I expect.

Will it be just certain areas, or the entire continent? Will there be changes to the quality of the ortho in areas where it isn’t that great?

But pretty clear that criticism was your intent as calling this a dog and pony show as opposed to (say) an open and honest sharing of information implies criticism. I think the key part is the “as part of a promotional campaign” as I don’t believe that is what is intended and hence you characterising it as such is criticism.

I very much enjoyed the Presentation.
It was informative, responsive to use inputs, and clearly showed the enthusiasm and dedication of both presenters.

I learnt far more about where MSFS was heading, than reading 100’s of posts in the forum, or anywhere elsewhere on the Internet.

It was pitched at exactly the right level to a wide range of MSFS users…

If it was up to me in any way, I would not have wanted anything changed or edited .

Really – ENOUGH said . get back on Topic

This is poor marketing for US people,

really I expect so many people living there and use this … so good tactic. I don’t care also about that  also about Japan as I said. I don’t want fill my SSD with another garbage.

Seriously why so much back and forth over “Dog and Pony show”. We all know what it means. Well geez I hope we all do maybe not… If you don’t know what it really means your input can no longer be taken seriously.

My personal thoughts most of their videos, Q&A, ect have been one huge dog and pony show.

Though they were a little more forthcoming in this last Q&A and did admit some errors/problems they have had. They also dismissed other bugs simmers have been having by stating they have fixed thousands of other bugs. It seemed quite arrogant and dismissive of some of the game breaking bugs and made it feel like they really weren’t that important.

Glad they have fixed thousands of bugs, but they’ve introduced a hundred more. The ones they have been fixing are not to the level of seriousness as crashing to desktop when pressing V. Also not as serious as some of the planes becoming dolphins when capturing altitude at cruise.

Id rather them fix some of these major bugs than hundreds of other small ones they seem to think are so important. The next 3 months will really tell whether or not they start truly listening AND taking simmers complaints seriously. Its not doing anyone any good just by them acknowledging the issues. They need to take them seriously. I dont feel like we are at that point yet. Hopefully we will get there, I honestly can’t answer that question.

…and yes, I am being critical when calling it a Dog and Pony Show, just in case there are still people out there who are wondering or don’t really understand what it means. Could also say they are putting lipstick on a pig, but its still a freaking pig. I wouldn’t have been so critical if they didn’t seem so arrogant. Maybe not everyone feels that way but it was the impression that I got.

Some of this can be chalked up to the team that is adding new content is not necessarily the same team fixing existing content that is broken i.e. they can do both, and not compromise development.

Also, some of this work is farmed out to external developers, in the case of the Japan update.

I am seriously considering purchasing the DVD version, assuming it is the Initial Release version.

As long as I never need to connect it t the Internet, I’ll be happy to run it till some of these major issues are resolved in the Download MS Store updated version.

I’ll live with having to put the qett DVD in each time, rather than the CTDs…

Anyone running the DVD version ? Can it install and run without ever connecting to the Internet ?

I ca live without LIVE … I cannot live with unflyable planes.

That DVD version would be at the initial release version, and assuming you can get it to work without having an update forced on you, you would be fixed that version.

I think someone stated they were able to revert to a backup of a previous version, and got it to work, so this may method may work for you, too.

I wasn’t considering the two, they are different aspects of the development.

I was really directly responding to how Jorg responded when asked the question about the amount of bugs in the game. I think the question could have been asked differently. The amount of bugs is not the problem it is the game and immersion breaking bugs that are a problem. Introducing new ones on update are also a problem. It tied in on the question about issuing hot fixes for the most serious ones and their answer was honestly quite unsatisfactory, to put it plainly.

Yeah, so we could get World Update #2, the US, and still get fixes to the Garmin avionics systems, or tweaked turboprop behaviour etc.
