Running MSFS 2020 with a 13900K, 4090 and a Quest 3 is simply stunning. Almost every graphics setting is maxed out.
This really is huge. It’s never been possible to do that in VR on a flight sim before. Running VR has always been a compromise of clarity vs immersion. Do you want good clouds or clear skies and more on the ground? It’s always been a balance of personal preferences. It seems like that may not be the case anymore.
Yes, this is quite a high end system but unbelievably the 4090 still has head room. I’ve no idea how they’re doing it but it’s pretty amazing.
I’m running DLSS quality and most settings are ultra. All numerical settings are topped out apart from TLOD which is now 350….an increase of 200 pre DLSS 4. Cockpit seems sharper than TAA with no AA shimmering. There is a bit of ghosting on the alt and speed tapes but really, who cares when the rest of it looks this good. This will only improve with refinement but it’s so good now. TAA is no longer the clarity king.
Personally i can’t use DLSS 4 as i have an AMD GPU. I haven’t ventured into VR either.
When I see claims like yours i just need a bit of background and reason for making the claim.
Lets see if others agree about DLSS
I think it will take a lot to beat TAA
It’s a fair point. I would not believe it if I hadn’t seen it.
My Quest 3 is in God like @ 72fps With ASW (so 36fps) and it’s silky smooth. With the Blacksquare Baron the task manager says the GPU is running at 70% in a heavy hitting area and 13gb VRAM which I though must be a mistake but the GPU temp is under 60 degrees so it’s not working that hard. I’ve no idea how the performance has leaped forward this much with a minor software update.
As a side, 2024 is better but still pretty poorly optimised. VRAM tops out (24gb) and the CPU workload randomly goes to 100% in task manger which causes a stutter fest.
It’s true, the overall sharpness of the image with the new DLSS is really stunning and makes it quite hard to go back to TAA. The only thing I really neet to get used to is the glass cockpit displays.
I have a very similar setup as yours but I don’t got that high with the settings because smoothness is much more important to me.
I’ve turned off raymarched because I think it doesn’t look quite right in VR when you move your head. It is super smooth though. Are you running with similar hardware headroom?
My father also has a Quest 3 with a 4070ti running almost the same settings with 14900K and the GPU is running around 90% (+/- 5%).
I don’t do the benchmark thing, I just run it through the Butt Dyno. As long as it’s smooth it’s usually fine. I’m on a 5800x3d and 3080 ti.
It’s so much better now. Settings are up, smoothness is better, cockpit is a bit better, etc. It feels like I just upgraded my graphics card. I fly pancake as little as possible and this made it so much better. I even get semi-decent clouds now.
Quality - looked good but latency seemed poor
Balanced/Performance - hard to see major differences, similar performance, smooth
Ultra Performance - a sludgy mess, looks like the early stages of eating a funny mushroom.
TAA is definitely better for glass but the cockpit seems sharper in DLSS. Steam gauges it’s no contest.
Strange that some people see no improvement. For me it’s a huge leap. Any other simmers tried it who have an opinion either way? Be interested to know what’s going on out there.
Quick question…what firmware is your quest on? I had an non ptc update yesterday (v72>v74) and got stuttering in virtual desktop. Dont know if this is v74 or an other reason.
DLSS 4 is a game changer in VR, no doubt . Clarity on the scenery is now amazing. However I hit around 26 fps in DLAA with 4090, I would need 30fps to use the reprojection of my Varjo Aero. Guess the problem will be solved with the 5090; I really hope this will be the first generation where we won’t have to choose between fps and visual fidelity in VR flight sims
Switch it to Quality, don’t really need anymore than that. I tried DLAA and with this version of DLSS I didn’t notice much difference. Be interested to hear the result.
But make sure that you are not bottlenecked by your CPU. I run a 4090 witha 5800x3d and i am CPU bottlenecked with my Quest 3 over Virtual Desktop. Same in my OG Crystal I think.
