Do you need to arm approach mode when doing VOR/DME approach?

On the ATR 72/42 when doing a VOR/DME approach is it better to arm the approach mode on the AP panel or just simply have nav source to vor and fly with LNAV?

Don’t know exactly, but I guess the approach mode is used only when you fly an approach with lateral and vertical guidance
