Does Anyone Else Miss 2D Cockpits / Panels?!

Ok, so I’m replying a year and a half later here…
Yes, finally multi-screen mode is here! But not what real cockpit builders expected. All is great setting up multi-monitors across our fov, but whats with the 3D cockpit showing all the insides? So all thats happened is a giant 3D cockpit in our face just behind our real cockpit. Where’s the full-screen view options? Waited 2 years for nothing! I’m sticking with VR.

Well, if you have a spare monitor, you can try the opensource instrument panel by Scott Vincent. I’ve been using it for some time and works pretty well. Just launch the data link and panel executables, press M to change the monitor and it’s ready to go. It’s also customizable as you can edit JSON files to re-arrange the instruments as needed.

While we don’t have first-party support from Asobo, this a nice free alternative. It’s also a free alternative to Air Manager depending on your needs.

I agree with this post, and I would add that those of us who have a home cockpit, the 2D view is imperative

Sorry to all who love 3D cockpits but removing 2D cockpits is just plain dumb. Why Microsoft insists on not learning ANYTHING about what simmers like , use and want is beyond me. They just don’t get it.

Why not put some ; in front of model.cfg of the plane you fly, on external and internal view then you have full view with no cockpit in your view.
Maybe even better copy complete c172 to community folder edit the model.cfg like above and copy
Airbus or boeing files in c172 map to create your own plane this way without cp but with knobs and engine power of heavy aircraft and no vc 3d 2d or whatever

Only just found this thread but I really miss having the choice of a 2D cockpit … If you feel the same then more votes are needed.

All I want to do is have an instrument panel on my iPad and dedicate my monitor to looking outside. I can’t see why this functionality is gone. I get that the devs prioritize by votes, but they really ought to take into account the time required to implement features. Sure, 2D cockpits and mouse joystick have fewer votes than improved traffic AI, but both could be done in a fraction of the time.

2D instrument panels are what the pilot sees in a modern cockpit.

They would save GPU resources for pop-out windows, for anyone wanting to upgrade their cockpit.

So not the whole cockpit in 2D, just the instruments on additional monitors.

I’ve been searching for a solution similar to XHSI or ZHSI to run my MSFS cockpit screens on a separate PC for the PMDG 737. It seems like integrating this feature using the current MSFS SDK might be difficult or hasn’t been attempted yet. I’m really impressed with the functionality of ZHSI. Does anyone with development experience know if this is possible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As a home cockpit builder, that has been flying sim from the very beginning.
I really miss the ability to have 2d panels.
As for now I can’t really use my cockpit probably.
It is frustrating to a point where I am considering
to Swits to x plane.
We are many that really needs 2d panels, one way or the other.

Do you know Air Manager From Sim Innovations?

I agree on your thoughts, but I don’t think Asobo is considering that

Even PMDG had popup 2D autopilot and FMC windows on their 777 in addition to superb 3d views. Just my thought…

The way I’d want 2d panels to work is if they were clickable windows on all the gauges that you’d be able to open on other monitors so you can move stuff around for home cockpit builders

That’s exactly the case !

100% miss clear , detailed, realistic looking 2D Panels

For us that like to separate panels it’s a must have!

Plenty of 2D panels across a range of aircraft can be achieved with Air Manager. I understand many of the comments in this thread are older from when FS2020 first released but these days you can have analog or glass cockpits on separate monitors to the outside view. https://experimentalsimavionics.com

Yes, but the outside FOV is very restricted. Air Manager, and other tools like POPM / Spacedesk can get instruments on other monitors, but the internal 3D cockpit instruments are still there.

Yes you need multiple outside view monitors a head/eye tracker or perhaps when it’s a little more main stream a mixed reality setup to alleviate that.
