DOF H3-h6 questions, chair models, buttkicker and other things, or other brand/type?

Curious for those that have purchased the DOF H2 or H3, what model chair did you end up purchasing… is it possible to put the buttkicker gamer pro on this setup as well?

Im assuming the main unit of the h3 uses a usb or usb-c, any cable length limitations there or use an extender that is active/powered?

For those that do VR, what about the situation where the main display is much further away, in my case the h3 sitting at the back corner of a 12x10 office, so i wont be near the main screen, how much of a pain does this become where you must fully rely on the goggle view of the desktop? (especially when it prompts for credentials)?

Ill be using honeycomb alpha /bravo and mfg pedals

Also, any real reasons to purchase any of the upgraded options for the h3? (or, should i go with something other than DOF reality, this unit with the one upgrade is around $2900 shipped)

There are upgrades like the sfu and damper kit that you can get for the dof version, unsure how much that adds.

EDIT: i think vr flight sim guy might be using a secretlab seat, though from what i’m seeing those are $500, i like the style at least, arm rests (for flight sim use)

Im thinking the omega rS6 (or any gt omega): RS6 Simulator Seat | Premium Quality Racing Seat | GT Omega Racing – GT Omega US $288 and and arm rest set for $54 4D Armrest | Office Chair | Gaming Chairs | GT Omega Racing – GT Omega US
Thanks in advance

Hello,
We ask that people not use General Discussion for help questions. I moved this to Home Cockpit Builders, since most people using 2DOF and 3DOF setups probably hang around here.

I’ve seen it mentioned something along these lines for motion sims and flying, but yet i see many that love the motion rigs, ala vr flight sim guy h2 or others with h3 or other setups so im confused by this (they call it realistic and like real world despite the way it works)…

“Why would you want your motion platform to tilt sideways synchronous to the roll maneuvers of the aircraft? In a coordinated flight there are no lateral forces on the pilot. Why would you want your platform to pitch accordingly to your climb and sink? In an accelerated dive (nose down attitude) the pitch down movement creates the wrong feeling of a decelerating aircraft.”

Seems the opinions are mixed?

back to the h3 setup, im definitely going with the upgraded motors and i cant figure out which seat fits and isnt a fortune

The platform should replicate the g forces not the orientation of the airframe. Say you swiftly roll your aircraft to the left to perform an aileron roll. The force you feel is the right part of the seat pushing into you. You will feel this as long as the roll continues because there is a constant force due to the rotation. This equates to the platform rolling to the right.
People understand this concept very well for surge - longitudinal - acceleration, where accelerating forward should tilt the platform back, but get confused in other degrees of freedom.
With this concept you can also replicate airframe yaw very well, since as the aircraft rotates around its center of gravity, you will feel a centrifugal force, rather than a rotation around your center axis. Such a force can be replicated with pitch and roll movement of the platform.

Hi, I’ve just ordered the h3. Could i ask which seat you went with? I’m struggling to find any info online.

The H2 ,H3 actually do just like you say if you are running it together with Sim racing studio

Hi Greg, I ordered the OpenWheeler Racing and Flight Sim Seat from Amazon. (I tried to post a link but it wouldn’t let me).
It’s very comfortable and the adjustable rails line up with the holes on the H3, however, you will have to use smaller bolts. I used (4) 6-1.00 x 40 hex bolts with lock washers and 6-1.00 nuts, available from any hardware store.

Thanks very much for the info, much appreciated.

How smooth is your experience when the rig is moving? On my H2 I feel a constant rumbling when the rig is in motion. It seems to be coming from the right hand SFU gearbox. Feels like the bearings in the ball screw have flat spots or some are missing. Still usable, just annoying and unsure about lifespan of the unit. Also have not found anything in their literature about lubrication of the SFU gearbox. Anyone lubricating it? I have a request in with DOF about this, just looking for others experiences as well.

So a month later here, i’m using the h6 (newer one with sfu), openwheeler chair (great), i have fanatec equip for racing now too, dd 8nm wheelbase + club sports pedals.

I use qr4rigs hot swap plates for those to flying and also for the hotas warthog stick locations.

I’m still trying to learn what slider settings to change in SRS, but getting there, often just download prefab ones and tweak.

Its pretty smooth through movements. There is a “cone” mod you can do to make any drag on the joints up top a little better (not the gear boxes), i have the parts but havent opted to do that yet (see the fb dofrrealitybuilders group)

I’m using simshaker aviators for flying and simhub for racing (and i also tried others, and settled on this combo) (buttkicker gamer pro with dof mount under seat plus a rubber gasket i made to increase grip)

I have a vive tracker with an absorption 3d printed mod for doing motion compensation + openxr with the aero.

I also made an extended foot rest mount out of plywood painted black and put rails to adjust the feet position as needed. (for pedals)

Hi, could you share the print file for the Vive tracker mount?

Thanks and br

I was reading reviews of the OpenWheeler seat on Amazon, and one person wrote the following:

“Downside is the rails… they are useless as it only locks in one side - so no matter how you assemble it, it will always be flimsy and shaking around on your right side. If you want a stable seat you will need to buy accessory rail.”

Is this a legitimate concern? I ordered an H3 and hope to find a seat that works without problems. I’d appreciate any thoughts or response to what this reviewer wrote. Thanks!

ill have to see if i still have the files, i forget where i pulled the files from, it was another forum that had them.

I had to tweak the ini file to keep things from visibly “shaking” on the screen for some reason too, there were two values or so that needed adjusted and it was fine, i also came to realize you have to activate via keystroke each time. There might be some programmatic way to have that auto activate on msfs launch, unsure, need to look into that. Honestly havent turned it on much, most of the time i’m flying low and slow vfr.

I didnt have that issue, though if memory serves me i think there was something about the rail that needed adjusted to make it line up, but as far as stable, its been rock stable and good.

I’m 6’6 so a part of me wants to torture myself and remove the seat and add the 2" extensions to get my legs to be at a better angle with the pedals… i almost can bump my hands on my legs when turning the yoke extreme.

I do have rails on the pedals, but its nearly at full extension.

What did you eventually do regarding motor upgrades/dampeners/etc? If you bought them do you feel it was worth it?

mine is the sfu h6, i experienced some studder or judder (not the cogging sound others talk about), so i did a diode fix, which i found and outlined over on the dof reality group on fb.

It cured that issue and has been great.
Thats the only real mod i did. Just opening control boxes and putting in 3 diodes in each one, no soldering, and easy.

My biggest issue is not knowing what sliders to set in SRS for msfs… i go with the archer downloadable one mostly, but i think it could be better (and set motion smoothing to 10 or less and boost to 35). I’ve seen the guides, but it would be nice if people would share sliders on similar systems per a few aircraft to get a feel for things. What i have feels ok though

I don’t have a clear picture of why and how the sliders can be adjusted, and what the implications are if they only lock on one side. Also, I’m 5’4", so I don’t know if I’ll have the opposite problem from yours! I guess my main issues are: Will it fit the H3 and perform in a stable manner? And if adjustments are needed, is it adaptable enough to accommodate those adjustments? And can a not-particularly-skilled person make the adjustments properly?

Thanks for your help with this! Much appreciated.

I think in my case i may have needed to drill an extra hole in each rail… that wasnt hard at all, just a drill bit and a drill.

As far as height, i guess at 5’4 you’d need less range (rearward) but having some range with sliding rails wouldnt hurt either.

I have a full post on everything i used for the the h6 on the dof reality group on fb located here: (pretty sure you need to join though)

Also here is the diode mod:
