Excessive thunderstorms again?

Right, it doesn’t have to have a stratosphere scraping anvil, but nearly all lightning is produced from cumuliform clouds that are many thousands of feet tall and producing precipitation. Lightning usually comes from precip that is being lofted vertically at speed through the freezing layer. You need a big and strong Cb for that to happen.

Whereas in the simulator, lightning is coming out of small “fair weather” cumulus with no vertical growth. It’s the norm in the simulator, but in real life that would be somewhere between impossible and an exceedingly rare freak occurrence.
