I live in rural America. Internet speed is about 1Mbps – that is about 1,000 bytes per second.
I purchased the Flight Simulator DVD package because the large downloaded would not work for me.
It took about 90 minutes to install and then connected to Microsoft Store and used my existing account.
All of a sudden it says that I needed to apply 53.71 Gbytes of updates. To put that in perspective at my Internet speed that will taek 13,237 hours or 552 days. In addition to that I will blow my limited Internet allocation and the extra cost will be about $300.
Clearly this is not what I expected.
Is there a way to not have to suffer through these downloads and use my DVD product or should I just put the entire purchase in dispute?
Your situation like many others is not optimal for the modern games/content currently being produced. There are a few solutions I can think of to help solve your problem(hopefully). 1. A lot of public libraries and other public buildings in most areas of the US have some form of “high speed” internet. Maybe you have a friend or even a store that has decently fast internet. You could take a laptop there and download the update at hopefully a significantly faster rate. Then transfer the game over to your primary computer for playing. Second, you seem like a perfect candidate for the new starlink internet that is going to likely be available in your area in the “near” future. It sucks that games are made today that are so reliant on fast internet and servers.
I hope this helps
With that being said - even if you manage to download the update somehow, you will very likely not be able to play with the data services turned on. With that resulting in very poor graphics. Sorry for the bad news
Thank you to the kind folks that took the time to reply.
As I mentioned, I was disappointed in the circumstance. Microsoft should recognize that almost 40% of American market does not have ‘high speed’ internet.
Their Microsoft Store response during my due diligence prior to purchase was D- at best.
I will get my money back but the disappointment lingers.
Not to be a ■■■■, but the bare minimum requirement is a 5Mbps connection. Microsoft HAVE given that warning. And bare minimum means it’s barely usable at that level. 50 Mbit+ is what’s really needed.
The DVD version of this sim is worthless outside of being just a physical copy that some people like having for whatever their reasons may be. The second you install it, you need to download all the latest stuff, which is going to be a huge download of the entire game over again. There’s no way around it.
Buying a DVD version when you have a low bandwidth connection doesn’t get you around the minimum requirements of the game. It’s no different than buying it from an online store, only you now have an extra step of installing from the DVDs before downloading the whole game again from the Internet before you can even play it.
