Eyes wide open

I suppose that by most reasonable definitions, I fall in to the “serious simmer” camp.
For, when I think about it, I have logged hundreds of flying hours over years of flying on various simulator platforms [mostly FSX and various iterations of P3d]. And I imagine that many an “old hand” out there in sim land will probably agree, this gives you a certain … perspective as to the state of the flight sim art and one’s own expectations therein.

Clearly any attempt to conjure up an analog of the real world with any degree of fidelity is such a monumental task that it will - at least for the foreseeable future - remain constrained and yes compromised by the efficiency of the programmers code and the power of our hardware platforms that that code has to run on.

So with all the above in mind, here’s how it went for me:
I got myself [as I am sure did a lot of people] a £1 game pass and spent almost a month flying in the sim and avidly reading [and occasionally commenting in] this forum.
This, of course, starkly revealed all the bugs and glitches and all the issues and problems that currently plague the software.
I then [having cancelled my subscription] in good conscience and with an open mind BOUGHT the [full fat] premium deluxe version.
With which I have been having a whale of a time ever since.

I guess the takeaway from this … if i’m honest, little rant - is that to properly enjoy MSFS 2020, right now, pre bugs fix and all, you just have to learn to
MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS.

Clear skies to you all.

Ahhh.
The cynics reposte perhaps.
No matter. Yours is a valid opinion reasonably made.

Sadly it is not cynicism but long term experience. I now turned to support small indie developers by buying their low price alpha releases and am surprised by their quality and originality even at this early stage.

But I am sure that after the scenery add-on Ingushetia and Inner Mongolia we will see the planes finally getting fixed.

Yes. Definitely a big up to the indie guys.
For the likes of Alex [LNM] and Pete [FSUIPC] it has always been about the model business and not the business model.

Well, having expected FSX to die out of my mind for quite some time… time i have spent racing and trucking mostly in other simulators, the news that Flightsim was coming back got me all giggity. As soon as the preorder launched i ordered the same fat version as you did, Captain.

Upon flying the sim for the first time, i realised i actually missed flying around. That buzzing of the engines which used to put me to sleep after an hour, was now with more fidelity, the surrounding area’s are now with more quality. Having seen the amazing screenshots, my mind wondered if there were actually sceneries that “didn’t look that amazing” and by watching some more pre-launch videos i found exactly that: lower quality scenery… which still looked better than what previous versions of Flightsim offered.
Through the years i haven’t been as savvy as some of you to jump on board of the newer flightsims as i didn’t “have to” feel like i needed to fly… now that feeling is gone. I’ve logged over 50 hrs already, in various planes, some i loved some i hated. After reading the forums i stayed the hell away from the A320, also because i’m not a particular Airbus fanboy, but mostly because i like the GA stuff more.

It’s been a fun experience so far, recreating large parts of two epic USA roadtrips i did (i’m from the Netherlands, Europe), taking a look at the pics i took, then finding those particular spots back in FS2020, and having a look at the scenery that one misses when one is on a motorway/stuck on the ground.
With all the misgivings on the forums, it definately takes away from the fact that Flightsim has yet again evolved… evolved to a level, the 15 year kid inside of me thought would be possible one day in the future… this kid, now being 45 years old and smiling a helluva lot whilst looking out the sidewindows, assisted by trackir, is enjoying this new sim a helluva lot better than what the forum suggests.
Then again, if the boys developing this product had thrown the towel in the ring at the first negative post in the forum, this would definately be a far worse experience than what we are getting right now. I love what the devs have done, i love what they are upto and i’m thrilled to experience even more of my long lost skills that i once learned in earlier flightsim versions.

I’ve been practicing vor’s, practicing ILS approaches, NBD DND’s or whatever the hell they were called again and been enjoying flying through adverse weather, it’s been a joyride so far, and when i’m finished with exploring the USA, i’m pretty sure i’m going to do cross countries… of ANY country out there, as that is the power of flightsim. Lovin it.

And for the “unfortunates” that keep complaining, empty your community folder, empty and turn off your cache, do a reinstall and you’ll find most of your problems have gone, as i’m guessing all the gunk we put in there, is broken by new twists and turns in the games engine or even a slight adjustment to the blackshark Ai programming.

loving the recreating of Meigs field though(bar the grass feel to the concrete texture). Took a flight from meigs in the c152 followed the coastline south then intercepted the vor from Chicago Heights on the 69degrees radial to intercept the ils to runway 30 at Chicago/Gary KGYY International… yeah, i guess i’m a flightgeek as well

Have a great flight boys and girls!

kindest regards,

Steiny

Most people I would think know that new games will be far from perfect. It amazes me to see all the whiner threads about all the issues in a tone like some ranting deserving child. I guess that’s what we’ve morphed into. In the ultra reality of it all it’s $60 - $120 game. An amount you can throw away in a dinner out out or some other thing that will be forgotten and useless the next day, If that amount of money is that precious don’t buy it. All these other big games out WT, WOT, Etc. have been out for 6-8 years and are still broke with every update. Games aren’t perfect and neither are our lives so they need to get a grip and grow up.

It has got nothing to do with “whining, ranting or hating”. But we are more and more urged to accept being sold half finished and buggy products at full price and if we complain we are told to cut the companies “some slack” as this mess is now the “new normal”. We buy banana software and hope it will ripen on our hard drives one day.
A lot of people, myself included, would have happily bought MSFS 2020 as “alpha release” for USD 15-20 and accepted the bugs, missing instruments, inoperational switches, weather hickups, fps drops etc. And many simmers would have gladly reported all the bugs in detail to the dev team on the respective web pages helping them to polish their product. Indie developers do exactly that. And I think this is the way to go.

I guess we “Twats” as you call us have been told. Fair enough, we`ll have to be better behaved when we have an opinion then hey!!!

Go to any forum for almost any major entertainment release and you will see multiple threads on how the developers are bone heads and the company is nothing but a money grabbing heartless corporation just to separate the clueless from their hard earned money. The product is filled with unforgivable oversights and bugs and has been released way too early because of corporate greed.

Just like all the movie sequels, we can only hope the complainers can come up with something original.

Why should them be original, if the corporations methods are the same? Of course the complains will be the same.

Case in point - no originality

Well, welcome back that man.
And thanks for sharing the goodness.

Well said indeed.

I didn’t walk into this purchase with high expectations.

The devs were open about the sim not being a completed product from the very 1st interview.

I’ll patiently wait as patches and improvements are implemented.

And when the premium 3rd party devs are all onboard producing their quality add-ons, it will only further complement this wonderful default/vanilla state flightsim.

The volume of headroom for this new tech to improve vastly outweighs what any of the competitors flightsim platforms currently offer or offer in the immediate future.

FUD incoming, watch out!

Nice post and I share your sentiments.

I feel exactly the same. Glass half full. Been a pilot for 40 years, instructing for 38, and this is the first desktop simulator that I can’t stop using. It’s not only fun, but an exceptional training aid. And it’s only going to get better.

That is fantastic writing, well done sir. Your entire post is entirely accurate, and reiterates what I have said numerous times on this forum as well.

Do not accept the “new normal.” Hold Asobo to a higher standard. Hold them to the standard that they marketed the product as.

I really appreciate all work and effort that Asobo and MS are putting into this sim, I think they are showing us a high commitment to solve the most important issues of the community. I feel that to fix those issues, like in any software development, takes more time than some are willing to wait, but if we can be a bit more patient we will have more constructive posts in the forums.

Everyone agrees there are bugs and you can make a case about whether it was “released early”. If you feel it’s not worth your money, ask for a refund. Many of us are thrilled to use the sim in its current state and continue to politely prod for the fixes/updates of the rest.

There are some here that just want to obsessively complain and don’t even bother submitting a ticket through the proper channels. The known forum FUD provider even admitted sending ONE ticket. I mean, what can we do? This sort of behavior is ruining the forum, we can’t have objective discussions to improve the sim.

I’m pretty sure next week many of us will be enjoying flying a “buggy sim” in Japan, but sooner than later this will become the best sim to date, it’s a matter of asking yourself if you can wait.

But many of these bugs were highly reported for the aplha/beta testers. They igbored them and release it broken anyways.
