There is a way that I have learned and used frequently when it comes to MSFS camera controls.
There’s actually 2 sets of camera mode. Each set has 2 camera mode inside it as well, so there’s actually a total of 4 camera modes grouped into 2 sets.
Cockpit - External Camera set: This one is either the normal cockpit view, or external view. Both of these camera have a “fixed” point of view. You can look to any direction, but the camera usually pivouts around a fixed point. In the cockpit, they’re fixed to your head as if you’re turning inside the cockpit. For external view, they’re fixed on your aircraft. So you can’t really move the camera away other than continuously looking at your aircraft.
Drone - Fixed Camera Set: This one is the other set where you can switch to drone camera for complete free rein and free camera movement to do fly by of airports or your aircraft while flying. Fixed Camera are the one that’s completely fixed like wing views, engine view, passenger window view, tail view, etc.
What most people don’t know is that the control command “Switch to External View” is actually about switching camera mode within the same set. While “Switch to Drone View” is actually about switching to a different camera set. And this is by default MSFS feature. No mods or custom views set up are needed. Just that it’s poor wording from that control command that most people don’t know about this.
So if you’re in Cockpit Mode. Pressing “Switch to External View” means you’re only cycling between Cockpit/External view back and forth. Because only those camera modes are contained within the same set.
If you’re in Cockpit Mode use “Switch to Drone Mode” means you’re cycling to different set but still on one camera. Cockpit/Drone back and forth.
The trick here is to press “Switch to External View” AFTER you press “Switch to Drone Mode”. Because when you switch to drone mode to change from Cockpit to Drone camera. Pressing Switch to External View will make your camera switch to Fixed mode.
Then you can use the control command “Previous/Next Fixed Camera” to cycle to different points in the aircraft. For example, you can cycle until you get to the passenger wing camera. Once your fixed camera is in the passenger wing camera. You can press “Switch to Drone Cam” command to switch to a different set. Remember, if your cockpi/external set is already set to Cockpit, the game will remember that and will switch you straight to Cockpit.
Because your fixed camera is already set to passenger wing view previously, pressing “Switch to Drone Camera” will immediately switch you from Cockpit to the passenger wing view.
See my livestream below when I do this. At 1:45 is where I start from External view and press “Switch to Drone View” then “Switch to External View” to quickly switch to the tail rudder fixed camera. Then I use “Previous Fixed Camera” until I get to the passenger wing view.
Then at 1:52 once I’m happy with the fixed wing camera, I press “Switch to Drone View” command again to bring me back to the other set that’s still in the external cam. Then I press “Switch to External View” to switch to my cockpit Camera.
At 29:09 mark, you’ll see that I only press “Switch to Drone View” to immediately switch from my cockpit to passenger wing view and press it again to go back to the cockpit quickly:
P.S Don’t worry about the poor pushback. That was a GSX bug when I did this flight.
