Fed up with poor update system

Many people don’t. Then something breaks and all hell breaks loose. I hope it continues to work for you

The problem is the installer is like Windows’ - unreliable junk. I’ve noticed on Store that it can’t even install the 1.5Gb base in any sort of sensible fashion. It stops, errors, sometimes won’t start without closedown or reboot. What on earth is it doing ?

It comes down to being based on FSX, a monolithic application. As is Windows.

This is why the updates fall apart. Linux is modular outside the kernel, so if you upgrade something you just upgrade that and everything else is left alone. Windows and MSFS are all intermingled bits (presumably fsx-base !) that require multiple changes at the same time to keep it working. If the install fails it is frequently half done and broken. In a modular system you can just reinstall the bit that didn’t work.

This is why upgrading Windows takes way longer than installing it in the first place. On my machine from partitions → desktop is about 10 minutes plus a bit of typing time. Doing the 20H2 update takes an hour at least.

This half baked update system is why we don’t have (almost) any complex aircraft. The whole system is just too unstable and unreliable. So every update the CRJ and A320NX have to be upgraded.

There is nothing worse in software development than trying to hit a significantly moving and unstable target. I still recall as a young man trying to develop on such a system. you could do simple things like a = 0 and occasionally it wouldn’t work. Same reason as MSFS partially, it was scaffolded old code.
