I’ve just updated to the 477.11 driver, and took the same occasion to update my Asus X570 motherboard and 3080 bios to their latest versions, and to my great delight it’s finally running great!
Finally PCI-e 4.0 enabled, without black-outs / blue screen, and generally nice and smooth, with clear and crisp graphics across a range of aircraft/locations.
A more cynical person might remark it should have been like this out of the box, but I’m happy at least it is now I recommend others who downgraded PCI-e to give it a shot.
I change them a bit, but right now flying OXR 80, repro off, preview oxr. MSFS 100, generally a few settings bumped up 1-2 steps compared to default VR, clouds, lod, etc. I hope that’s helpful?
OXR 100, repro off, MSFS 100 and all in Ultra
HT in Bios Off,
I think it also depends on the board x570 and ram bars (Dual with 3200) as well as the SSD m2.
Oh, good point, HT (SMT) off in bios is an important one. This one I don’t really consider a “hack” like downgrading PCI-e. It just allows the single cores used by MSFS to have a full physical core, which makes sense.
I think turning off SMT is more of an impractical change than PCIe to 3.0, because with SMT off, you loose the ability to use the standby mode, which is pretty much essential for me since there’s no need to shut down the PC every time. With PCIe to 3.0, you don’t loose anything for now since the GPU doesn’t use full 4.0 bandwidth anyway. That may change with upcoming Re-sizable BAR compatibility.
However, turning off SMT didn’t make any difference for me (5600X). Performance changes in MSFS VR seem to be random often, and sometimes I do account changes in performance to certain settings if in fact it was something else that is not really reproducable.
Which BIOS are you using? the official 1.2.0.2 or the 1.2.0.3b beta release?
My biggest hope is that Jörg and the others from the Asobo team are just laughing at us now edging out every single frame in VR, while they’re already playing with their much improved DX12 SU5 builds that they’re not allowed to show until maybe the Dev Q&A tomorrow. And I hope they’ll tell us: “You don’t have to worry about all these little settings anymore, it’ll just run fine”.
That’s interesting - I need to check with HT off.
I have 5900x, MSI x570, 3090 Gaming X trio, 32 GB (2x16) RAM on 3866, M.2 1Tb and have almost all on Ultra (except trees, buildings) and as far as I done some short fly few days ago, with new driver it was still more smooth on 125 OXR and MSFS 80 scaling, than 100-100. I am flying mostly with Piper Arrow IV on low altitudes.
And I had no impact when trying “200 pc/flat scaling hack”.
Interesting. I saw a significant difference when I switched, but perhaps something else was affecting it. That’s the problem with MSFS, there’s really so many variables and random behavior that it’s very hard to conclude anything.
Based on your comment I think I’ll give it another shot this weekend and see if I can reproduce a difference.
Yes! 471.11 makes VR experience much better, I wondered why nobody was talking about it before. I’m enjoying this update on my msi laptop and acer wmr headset.
